Annual Conference 2018. Emerging Landscapes:
Constructing and Re-constructing Spaces for Youth and Community Work
Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th June: Wrexham Glyndwr University

Call for Papers/Presentations: Closing date Friday30thMarch, 2018

The Association will be hosted by Wrexham Glyndwr University for this year’s Annual Conference in the week that Wales celebrates ‘Youth Work Week’. This provides a timely opportunity for Association members and our wider network to celebrate and reflect on the ‘emerging landscapes’ for youth and community work across the four nations of the United Kingdom and with our partners from around the globe.

There is no doubt that youth and community work, as a distinct professional practice, has faced considerable challenges during a period of austerity in the UK – however – we are witnessing a re-emergence of practice and its expressions in new and renewed spaces across the four nations and around the globe. Conference will explore this emerging landscape through main sessions that address national and international perspectives on constructing and reconstructing spaces for youth and community work practice.

In addition to our main conference sessions, there will be three seminar streams addressing ‘Emerging Landscapes’, delivered in partnership with BERA SIG (British Education Research Association Special Interest Group) Youth Studies and Informal Education. We are inviting contributors to address:

  1. Diversity of Practice:We invite contributors to provide an account and evaluation of the spaces and places in which youth and community work is being constructed and/or reconstructed
  2. Sustainable Futures:We invite contributors to present on the frameworks and conditions for securing a sustainable future for youth and community work practice (and the training/education of workers)
  3. Collective Identity:We invite contributors to offer perspectives on securing a collective identity for youth and community work practice as new landscapes for practice and education emerge

There is an open call for papers and workshops on these themes that address theory, research and professional/educational practice. Abstracts are invited using the proposal form (see next page) and the deadline for abstracts is Friday 30thMarch, 2018.Outcomes and invitations will be confirmed bythe week commencing 9thApril, 2017 allowing presenters time to benefit from Early Bird conference booking.

Anabstract, maximum of 400 words, is required for both formal papers and informal presentations/workshops. Presenters are normally afforded a 30minute slot and the style of presentation for both optionsshould be participative and encourage dialogue/questions.
