Fall 2003 BIOLOGY 156
LABORATORY COMPONENT OF COURSE
Course Description: A laboratory to accompany the lecture component of Biology 156. A study of the systematics, structure, function and ecology of the plant and animal kingdoms.
Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in Biology 156 lecture component. Successful completion of Biology 155 or equivalent.
Course Goals: To present to each student the following principles and concepts in biology
Plant diversity, morphology and ecology
Animal diversity, morphology, behavior and ecology
Expected Student Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will:
know the structure and diversity of the Fungi
know the structure and diversity of the Liverworts, Mosses and Hornworts
know the structure and diversity of the seedless vascular plants
know the structure and diversity of the Gymnosperms and Angiosperms
know the vegetative structure and function of vascular plants
understand the importance of plant transpiration and plant hormones
know the structure and diversity of the Invertebrate Phyla
know the structure and diversity of the Vertebrate Phyla
understand the function of animal micro structure, respiration and circulation
understand the function of vertebrate kinematics and muscle physiology
understand how animals interact with environmental stimuli
understand the basic principles and concepts in ecology

Attendance: required for successful completion of course. Students who miss laboratories without an acceptable excuse will be either asked to drop the course or may have their grade demoted. Instructors will determine what is an acceptable excuse. Students are responsible for the contents of the lab missed and may make up the lab only during lab times regularly scheduled that week. Make-up exams will only be given with an acceptable excuse, and at the convenience of the instructor.
Methods of Evaluation: two practical exams, a comprehensive multiple-choice final, plus one (1) laboratory report, each worth 100 points. Cumulative grade in laboratory will account for one-quarter (1/4) of your final grade in the course. The other three-fourths (3/4) of your final grade will be from your lecture component of the course. Grading is by the 10 pt. scale: 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, etc.
Cheating: dishonest, disorderly, and disruptive behavior will be dealt with as detailed in the Code of Student Conduct.
Instructors and office hours: Dr. Tom Soniat, 135 Peltier, 448-4865, . Office hours at 7:30-10:30 MWF and by appointment. Dr. Allyse Ferrara, 223 Gouaux, . 9:40-12:00M, 7:30-8:30W, 9:40-12:00W, 2:00-4:30W. Earl Melancon (Spring).
Important Date(s): Nov. 3rd is the last day to drop with a “W”.
