CORE KARES lesson plan for

Monday, August 8th

Topics: Principled and Respectful

Duration: approximately 30 minutes

Materials needed: Safford K-8 PBIS Matrix and a blank sheet of paper for each student.

Procedure: Teachers will distribute a copy of the Safford K-8 PBIS Matrix and blank paper to each student. Students will also need the Matrix for tomorrow’s CORE KARES lesson, so please consider collecting them afterwards to conserve paper. Explain to students that we will be focusing upon the expected qualities of being principled and respectful.

Teacher will direct students to the first column (Classroom and Library) and allow students a minute or two to silently process the language within both cells. The teacher then conducts a short brainstorm with the entire class using specific examples of what these qualities might look like in each area. Remind students that all behaviors described in the matrix are expected of ALL students! Students will then select the appropriate quality descriptor in each situation. The following list contains recommendations of what to read for each area. Feel free to add your own scenarios:

Location: / Suggested Scenarios to Read:
Classroom and Library / You notice that one student is complimenting another student about her cool new shoes. This is an example of…(Being Respectful: Use kind words and actions)
Playground and Field / You notice that a Safford visitor is lost on the playground and is looking for the Habitat. You offer directions to help the visitor get to where she’s going. This is an example of…(Being Respectful: Respect all adults)
Hallways / During a passing period in a hallway, you notice a student writing on a hallway poster. That person has violated the expectation of…(Being Respectful: Respect all hallway posters and displays)
Cafeteria / While eating your lunch, you observe two students cleaning up the table before leaving. This is a good example of… (Being Principled: Maintain a clean environment)
Bathroom / After using the bathroom, you take the time to wash and dry your hands before leaving. This is an example of…(Being Principled: Wash and dry hands properly)
Bus / While on the bus, you scoot over to make room for another student. This is an example of…(Being Respectful: Honor personal space)
Assembly / While in an assembly, you notice that a student has turned around to talk to another student behind him—paying no attention to the speaker. That student has violated the expectation of…(Being Respectful: Face forward)

If there is time left over, students could write one sentence describing one quality descriptor in each area. For example, in the Bus “Honor personal space” could be written as “I will not crowd others while on the bus.”

It is recommended that the teacher collects all student responses for a participation grade.
