Project Code & Title: / PPRA1706 - Measurement & Simulation of Head Impacts in Sport – Mr. Stephen TiernanThis project will investigate head impacts in rugby. The project will use instrumented mouth guards to measure the severity of the head impacts sustained by players; linear and rotational accelerations will be recorded. The mouth guard that we will use has been developed in Stanford University and has been used in American football and ice-hockey. We will work with a college rugby team some of whom will be given the instrumented mouth guards. Following a match, data from the mouth guards will be downloaded onto a labtop. This data will be applied to a simulation model of the head (Wayne State Model) and the resulting movement, strain and pressures within the brain will be determined.
This project will run alongside projects in St James Hospital and Trinity college Dublin. We will be comparing our simulation results to MRI scans taken of the players post incident.
The project will address the following research questions:
1. What linear and rotational accelerations are experienced by the head in a collision in rugby?
2. What accelerations are experienced by a player when a concussion is sustained?
3. What is the frequency and severity of sub concussive impacts experienced by rugby players?
4. What occurs within the brain after an impact? Where, within the brain, is the injury located?
5. How do simulations of the brains stress and strain compare to medical diagnosis and advanced MRI scans?
6. How do the impacts in rugby compare with American Football (NFL), particularly in severity, location and duration?
