Hollyford N.S.

Hollyford N.S Swimming Policy.

Aims/Purposes

·  To enable pupils to acquire basic swimming skills while they are at Hollyford National School

·  To comply with the requirements of the Revised Curriculum in aquatics.

Procedures Guidelines

·  Each pupil will attend an 8 week session in a swimming pool annually from Junior Infants – 6th class

·  The swimming pool in Tipperary Town has been reserved for eight weeks on Wednesdays from 1.45pm-2.30pm.

·  Costs incurred by hiring of pool, payment of instructors and bus transport necessitate a charge of €30 being imposed on each pupil. The school’s fundraising committee generously contributes to the cost of swimming. Inability to pay will not preclude a pupil from participating fully in swimming classes.

Instructional Arrangements

Miss Ryan organizes the swimming lessons and transport.

·  In developing partnership with the parents in the school, parents who are garda vetted will help in the changing rooms.

·  Instruction in the pool will be provided by 1 swimming instructor in the baby pool and depending on numbers by 2/3 swimming instructors in the big pool.

Travel and Supervision Arrangements

Pupils will be accompanied by and supervised by class teacher as they travel by bus to and from the swimming lessons. Collection for all children from school will be 3.30pm approximately. Supervision is provided by a male garda vetted parent in the boys changing room, by a teacher and garda vetted parents in the girls changing rooms and by a teacher and garda vetted parents in the family room for Junior Infant to Second class boys. (See Organisational Implications section 12 in Hollyford N.S Child Protection Policy)

Health and Safety

Best practice in relation to the supervision, instruction and child protection procedures as outlined by the Irish Sports Council, Swim Ireland and the National Safety Council will be adhered to at all times.

Pupils are required to behave at all times in a manner that ensures the safety of all involved in school swimming.

Parents/guardians will receive a standard letter providing information on school swimming before their child starts their swimming sessions in the second term. A rota is drawn up on a weekly basis to see what parents are available to help.

Where a parent/guardian has a health concern regarding their child’s participation in swimming, professional advice must be sought before the child participates in the swimming lesson.
