Press Release

Automechanika 2012, Frankfurt am Main

Coesfeld, GERMANY, Sept. 6th, 2012

Automotive parts with sustainable benefits

Remanufactured automotive products create jobs, conserve up to 85% material/energy, have a huge positive impact on the “greenhouse effect”, protect our environment, and significantly reduce costs for end users. Approx. 10% of the current automotive spare-parts aftermarket consists of refurbished parts. The availability of remanufactured parts from alternators to wiper motors is constantly on the rise.

Remanufacturing

The European automotive remanufacturing business is worth approximately 10 billion Euros in retail sales*.

A remanufactured part functions the same as the original part. It is refurbished from an existing part (core), using standardized industrial processes in line with specific technical specifications. A remanufactured part comes with the same warranty as a new part, is given a part number, and is clearly identifiable as a remanufactured part.

The environmental benefits of remanufacturing

Remanufacturing has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in the EU 27 by 400 kilotons. This is the equivalent to saving 170 million litres of gasoline or reducing emissions of 200,000 cars per year. It is also comparable to the absorption capacity of 30,000 hectares of forest per year (more than the size of Frankfurt).*

Remanufacturing conserves up to 85% material/energy compared to the production of new parts.

Millions of tons of raw materials are saved each year. Compared to new parts, remanufactured parts are not only more economical, but significantly contribute to the improvement of the global environment. Compared to repaired and used parts, they are far superior in quality and availability in many ways. Remanufactured parts are simply the best choice.

/ This graph shows the enormous difference in CO2 emissions between remanufactured automotive parts and the production of new parts.

Employment

The remanufacturing business provides approx. 32,000 jobs in the EU 27* and the amount of jobs created by this labour-intensive industry is steadily on the rise.

End-user benefits

Remanufactured products are significantly less expensive for the end user* because of the savings in raw material and manufacturing costs.

Automechanika, Frankfurt

Many companies, who are involved in the remanufacturing business, are exhibiting their products at the Automechanika trade show in Frankfurt. Enclosed is an attachment of association members and their products.

ReMaTec 2013, Amsterdam

The leading European trade fair for remanufacturing is called ReMaTec. All key players in the automotive- parts remanufacturing industry will be in Amsterdam from June 16th-June 18th 2013.

General information about APRA

The remanufacturing industry is organized through a global association called APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association) with more than 2,000 member companies.

The objective of this association is to promote the general business interests of the remanufacturing industry and foster the spirit of recycling for a better environment. It also provides members with forums, exhibitions and workshops to interact and consult with each other on issues affecting the entire industry.

General information about FIRM

FIRM is the European umbrella organization representing the interests of engine remanufacturers and rebuilders. A total of 10 national trade associations, representing more than 1,000 engine remanufacturers, rebuilders’ workshops and companies, are members of FIRM.

The mission of FIRM is to raise awareness among European policy makers of the role played by engine remanufacturers in sustainable safety, security, and the environmental compliance of engines. FIRM also contributes to policy-making processes within EU institutions and promotes remanufacturing by raising public awareness for the sake of the environment.

The collaboration of APRA and FIRM

The development of the remanufacturing business is influenced through European legislation. APRA and FIRM are actively promoting the unique advantages of remanufacturing. Both associations are organizing partners of ReMaTec.

Remanufacturing increases environmental sustainability, reduces CO2 emissions, saves raw materials, creates employment in Europe, and significantly lowers costs for the end user.
