The Olympic Region Materials Laboratory inTumwater, WA is currently seeking a Materials Laboratory Lead. This position will perform the following work:

  • Perform laboratory and field testing of materials per WSDOT and the Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC)procedures for Hot Mix Asphalt, aggregates, and soils in a consistent and uniform manner.
  • Train and qualify others in the performance of material testing under the WAQTC.
  • Utilize personal computers for office software (Word, Excel, etc.) and Materials Testing System (MATS).
  • Traverse uneven and rough terrain.
  • Perform yearly verification of all testing equipment for the Olympic Region including calibration and repair.
  • Maintain materials testing equipment inventory for region and project field offices.
  • Perform pit and quarry sampling and asphalt coring.
  • Assist with other functions of the Region Materials Office as required.

The ideal candidate will have one of the following:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or Bridge Engineer 1.
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training AND one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or Bridge Engineer 1.
  • A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Traffic, or Transportation.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

An ideal candidate for this position will also have:

  • WAQTCcertified in Hot Mix Asphalt and aggregate modules or ability to become certified in 30 days.
  • The ability to routinely lift 35 pounds and traverse uneven terrain in wet conditions.
  • The ability to work while standing for long periods.
  • The ability to communicate proficiently, both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
  • Ability to apply engineering standards contained in the department's manuals.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, engineering and computer-aided drafting/design software.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement department policies, principles, standards, and practices.
  • Understand and follow WSDOT policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform work in a safe manner and in accordance with WSDOT safety policies.
  • Valid driver's license.

Note:

This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
