Unit- Street Art

Lesson Title- Introduction to Street Art and Graffiti Artists

Time – 80mins

Grade Level –7th and 8th grade

Behavioral Objective- SWBAT learn street art vocabulary, participate in a for and against chart for artists, and create a patterned brick background for their final projects

Standard- (1) Create, Perform, and Participate in the Arts

(3) Respond to and Analyze Works of Art

(4) Understand Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts

Procedure-

0-5mins 1) Anticipatory Set- Greet students, Have them Sit down. And begin working on their daily sketch assignment “word of the day”-(See general classroom procedures for instruction) Go through attendance.

5-8mins 2) Input- Gauge how much they know about street art and graffiti. Ask them if they’ve ever been to NYC or ever seen graffiti. Ask them what else they think belongs into the category of street art.

8-32mins 3) Modeling- Have them watch video on street artists. Banksy, JR, Posterboy, Shepard Fairey, Knitta Please, and Pixelators.

32-40mins 4) Understanding- Go over the artists again and definitions from handout

40-55mins 5) Understanding/Practice- Have them split into groups. Each group is given artists and must go through the pro and con side of their art. Have them do this on giant paper that each group will present. Move around room and MONITOR

55-60mins 6) Modeling- Ask questions and prompt for add ins on the papers. After this activity ask them to put on smocks and come to demo table. Once their show them how to make a brick pattern on paper.

60-75mins 7) Practice- Have them make brick pattern background on paper. Make sure review actual off-set pattern with students

75-80mins 8) Clean-up- Clear tables, clean the supplies, and put away everything.

Vocabulary-

Street Art- Is visual art found in public spaces. The term usually refers to unsanctioned art, or opposed by the government.

Graffiti- Is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on the wall or another surface of a public space

Tag- Is an artist name or graffiti signature

Materials- Big Paper Pad, markers, paint, sponges, and artist work examples.

Modifications/ Differentiation

Content- Monitor closely and work with tier 1 students. With reading and writing especially.

Processes- Let students pick own colors.

Products-

Learning Environment- Select student groups. Separate behavior problems into different groups (See Attendance)

Interdisciplinary/ Common Core Elements-

Social Studies- Geogrpahy of where artists are. History of Graffiti and street art.
