forest hill WST - Here's a fun Foresthill ride, starting at China Wall staging area, trail #5, #6, lower half of the WST to Michigan Bluff to Last chance and beyond. Best in late spring, early fall.

Forrest hill 7-4-05

Track is comprise of a couple of Rides starting just out of Shirttail Creek campground. Took Elliot Ranch Road South and road mainly trails 7 and 1. It was a fun ride for the kids.

Foresthill – norden- truckee This track goes over the sierra crest on dirt via soda springs road to norden.

Hell cyn – counts pine nuts

Hennesee- cmptn - henesse 2 campton reno.gdb Comtonville to Reno I80 is for losers-camptonville north of sacramento to reno the dirty way.75 miles. Gas in reno and camptonville/grass valley. Easy skanking -gs/klr/950 friendly

I've done Henness Pass Rd twice in the last 3 weekends. Its a kick. I got waypoints from a 4WD book and created a GPS route that saved me a lot of time trying to figure out where we were and which turn to take. It also bypasses most of the pavement between Jackson Meadow Resevoir and 89.
I also included two bonus routes near the eastern end of Henness which are more challenging than Henness Pass. Beacon Peak is a little harder. Smaller road, steeper, tighter turns, more rocks, but great views. Even more challenging is Verdi Peak, with even more rocks. Both are doable by a good GS rider. I did it on a VStrom 650.
Another pretty challenging road in the area I discovered last weekend is Meadow Lake Rd between Meadow Lake and Bowman Lake. According to my 4WD books it was suppose to be a fairly easy road (ala Henness) but apparently the FS or County didn't have the funds to maintain it this year so its only passable to jeepers, quads and bikes. There's lots of rocks and ruts from runoff, some ruts were 3' feet deep. We'd stop at a few sections wondering if they were going to be passable, walk them to scout and indeed they were all doable. It was quite an adventure. Got pics but haven't uploaded them yet.

HWY4 to HWY 50 - This is a fun Ride for a GS, a good mix of dirt two track and some fun paved sections.

Johnson Lane - This is a short ride with some tight single track, best done counter clockwise, in the Pinenut Range. The ride starts at the end of Johnson Lane off of Hwy 395 between Minden and Carson City. Johnson Lane is a popular staging area that has plenty of camping area. Be respectful of the homeowners near the staging area as they are starting to complain to the BLM about the increased use of the area, and we want to keep this area open.

Minnehaha - ?

Moon 1-05 –

mr060225.gpx - This is a fun loop we did in Feb. Lots of great mountaintop views. All off road; no plates required.

Mtn_Desert-ride.gdb - This is a two day ride that starts off of Hwy 88 near Cooks Station. It passes some of the nearby lakes, and then heads over the pass into the Nevada desert. After some great desert riding, you head into Carson City and pig out at a buffet, play some craps, and crash. The next day, you head back up into the Sierras, cresting at Geneoa Peak at 9000 feet, and then drop into Lake Tahoe. You take a combination of roads and trails back to your starting point. Best done in late summer when the snow has somewhat melted. It is in GDB format, and is broken into three sections.

“5 and 6 july 05.gdb – a variation of mtndez:

thanks for this track- i gave some sections a shot. Worked out ok but some sections were impassable and had to be bypassed because of a huge tree/signed closure (omo ranch to hwy 50). The other section i did from markleeville down to 395 was really cool. No snow but where it cuts off leviathan mine rd onto bryant creek i pussied out because of the water.”

PineNutsbigloop - There are so many areas to ride in the Pine Nuts it's hard to pick which tracks to post. This is a big 90 mile loop in the Pine Nuts going through many hidden areas most riders never find, thanks to my good ol' friend Norm. This guy is 60+ years old and if you do this track you won't believe it. 2 flat tires, 2 pooped riders that went back early, 1 bike out of gas (had to share to get back) and 2 very tired finishers. Moderate to difficult terrain. See May 15th, 2003 on link below for pics and details:

Nice track, Red Canyon and Rattlesnake Peak are fun places to ride, I have never tried going over the west side of Rattlesnake, I will have to try it next summer, or possibly earlier if I can get a snowpack report from Countdown. Somewhere between 'puke' and 'junk' there is a plane wreck, don't have the exact location but I would probably recognize the area if I saw it again.
Do you have any tracks out of Johnson Lane? I have ridden there a few times but don't know the area very well, (I usually camp in Smith, Yerington or Weeks) following someone else's tracks would be helpful.

Pinenuts ??? Jerys and the one on the aaaaadvrider with link

Here is the track of a great ride we took this weekend out of Minden Nevada. We went up over the Pinenuts Mtns into Holbrook Junction and then back to Minden. I also inlcuded a track of the Tahoe Rim Trail from Kingsbury Grade to Hiway 50.
The ride was done on 650 Dual Sport bikes and was challanging as well as fun. A lot of the ride was over 8000ft elevation so snow is an issue. Some pictures from the ride.

redcyn – ? its in the pinenuts big loop

red star ridge - RED STAR RIDGE TRAIL ABOUT 25 MILES ABOVE FORESTHILL CALIFORNIA.
THIS IS TIGHT SINGLE TRACK THAT YOU CAN MAKE A LOOP BY ADDING THE SUNSHINE HILL RD.
START FROM ROBINSONS FLAT CAMPGROUND WHICH IS AT THE END OF THE FORESTHILL RD AND THE START OF SODA SPRINGS RD. WE ROAD FROM ROBINSONS FLAT ON TO THE DUNCON CREEK TRAIL FOR THE START BUT THREE OF OUR RIDERS DECIDED TO BACK TRACK THE 17 MILE TRAIL AND FOUND THAT RIDING RED STAR FROM THE EAST END WAS MUCH EASIER SO YOU MAKE THE CHOICE. CLOCK WISE SEEMS EASIER THAN COUNTER CLOCKWISE.
THIS IS A VERY ROCKY AND TIGHT TRAILS FOR 17 MILES, NO BIKES LARGER THAN A 650 AND I WOULD SAY YOU NEED TO BE A GOOD RIDER FOR A 650. THIS IS A HARD CORE RIDE NOT FOR YOUR AVERAGE TRAIL RIDER AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE WITH A BUDDY.
RUTS NORTH RIDERS DID THE RIDE ON MOSTLY 250 CC BIKES WITH ONE 450 AND A 300 KTM, YOU CAN VIEW THE PHOTOS AT http://www.rutsnorth.org/photos.html

reno-doyle - This track starts at the University of Nevada parking lot. The half way point is Doyle CA. Lots of high desert riding, lots of single track and lots of alpine logging trails in the eastern Sierra. Approximatly 125 mile out and back loop.

Reno.gpx - I have saved some reasonable tracks for an adventure ride around Reno.
1) Crystal Peak mine - Where old radio crystals were mined. Now there is a mountain of rejected crystals.
2) Barker Pass - Rubicon loop. The easy part.
3) Jumbo Grade - From Washoe Lake to Virginia City
4) Lousetown Road - From Lockwood (I-80) to Virginia City.
5) Tahoe Rim Trail - The OHV portion from South Shore to Hwy 50.
6) Martis Peak - Now paved, this is a great view from the fire look-out.
7) Toll Road - The old tollway climbing Geiger Grade to Virginia City.
There are numerous other options for adventure connecting to these trails. Email me at RL at Lemke.com and I will reply with a GPX file. Please be clear in the subject line.

Bikes on that ride:
Husky 610TE
BMW XChallenge
KTM640A
The whole loop is about 100miles and it took us 7 hours. I used Garmin Zumo 550 with 24K Topo. Most of the trails are listed on Topo24K.
The terrain was easy/fast as in some spots we hit 50mph. There are a few technical sections and the loop near the lake could be under water in the spring.
Also the last trail that we hit was a singletrack and very technical. With 6hours of riding we decided to head back as we were crashing too often. The last part is NOT recommended to be ridden by a bike over 300lbs or 600cc. So don't take your GS or 990Adv or you will be stuck.
All earlier trails are doable in bigger bikes.
Here is a short video from that ride.
