Proportional Reasoning: Fractions decimal and percentages (61-66, 72)

Lesson context/focus: Conversion of % to decimal to fractions. Calculating percentages of values e.g 10% of £250.00.

Know the meaning of the words %, decimal/ fraction

% = something out 100

decimal = the % divided by 100, (move two decimal places to the left)

Fraction = 20% = 20/100

Learning Objectives:

Calculate fractions of numbers, quantities or measurement

Convert fractions to decimal to percentages and understand the link

Differentiation: By outcome and write on sheets are available by printing out worksheets

Structure of lesson

Starter: (5-10mins) Brainstorm on what they know about fractions/ decimals/ percentages. Write down Key terms (fractions, decimals and percentages) – checking spellings

Questions: How do you know that? Can you give me an example?

Main activity:

(20 mins teacher lead activity) - Open VTB vol 1 Fractions decimal & percentages F>D>P with graphs – work through as whole class. Discuss: can they explain the graphs?

F>D>P – look at conversions as whole class – work through examples by pressing New. Once students are confident click on hide and get them to work through 5 examples in their books. On their own.

Click on Setting it out work through a few examples as a class looking at it step by step. Encourage oral participation.

(10-15 mins) Now an opportunity for students to practise what they have learnt. Click on seven questions and get students to work through. Giving them answers once all seven have been completed – time allowing.

Plenary: Around the clock (5mins)
