25 / Mitch Albom
When Mitch Albom wrote his first novel Tuesdays with Morrie, he never imagined it would change his life forever. Mitch wrote the book to help his friend; he didn’t think that his little book would inspire millions of people and change him from a sports writer into a famous author.
Mitch Albom was one of the most successful sports writers in the U.S. He won many important prizes and he had his own TV and radio shows. Then, in 1995, Mitch learned his favorite teacher, Morrie Schwartz, was dying, so he decided to spend Tuesdays visiting with Morrie, as they used to do back in college. These meetings turned into one final “class”: a course in living. One of the most important lessons he learned from Morrie was that “living was giving”. After Morrie died, Mitch decided to give back something to him by writing Tuesdays with Morrie. The money from the book helped Morrie’s family pay his medical bills. Tuesdays with Morrie became a best seller and eventually it was made into a popular film.
That was the first of many best sellers. After that, Mitch wrote six more books about ordinary people. His books are about rabbis, janitors, baseball players, drug addicts, and preachers. Three of these books have already been made into films. For all his characters, life is an obstacle course. Some of them fall along the way, others rise, but all of them eventually find meaning through helping others.
Inspired by Morrie’s teaching, Mitch established eight new charities in his hometown Detroit. These charities have made a big difference to the city. They’ve improved the school system, provided homes for the homeless, and they’ve helped the poor with medical care. Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Mitch had been involved with an orphanage. This time, he isn’t just a donor; he travels to Haiti four times a year to help out.
Mitch says “You are how you act, not just how you believe.” Mitch is like one of the characters in his books. He has traveled a long road, but he’s found happiness through helping others.
