Course Description

The purpose of this course is to impart practical counseling and operational principles for use in long-term programs for the chemically dependent, with a particular focus on homeless addicts and alcoholics.

Degree Program Outcomes

At the conclusion of this degree program, the student will able to:

1.  Students who complete the Addiction Studies program will:

·  Understand the12 core functions of addiction counselorsto be academically prepared to become a certified addiction counselor.

·  Understand and demonstrate the essential practices of addiction treatment includingscreening, intake, assessment, treatment planning and aftercare. (Core Functions 1-5)

·  Understand and usebasic counseling skillssuch as effective listening, assessment, crisis intervention, group therapy and working with other professionals (Core Functions 6, 8, 12)

·  Understand and apply basic counseling professional practices including ethics, working with various client groups, case managementand record keeping skills. (Core Functions 7, 10, 11)

·  Understand and apply understanding of other issues related to addiction recovery such amental illness, family dynamics and sexual and spiritual issues. (Core Function 9)

This position will prepare graduates to be an Addiction Counselor (SOC21-1011). We have a91% job placement ratefor our graduates.

2.  Students completing the Urban Missions program will:

·  Understand and apply thehistory, philosophical and theological basis of movements of Christians serving the poor, the oppressed and urban communities.

·  Use spiritual care skills such aspreaching, counseling, evangelism and discipleship in the urban context.

·  Lead others to accomplish the missions of the organizations with which they are affiliated.

·  Understand and apply principles from the various programs that are offered to people in the urban context including addiction recovery, community development, services to the homeless, women, youth work and family ministries.

This position will prepare graduates to be a Religious Worker (SOC, 21-2099), Minister (SOC 120.107-010), Missionary (SOC 120.107-010) and rescue mission Chaplain (120.107-010). Some roles in these fields will require higher education, such as an MDiv. We have a91% job placement ratefor our graduates.

Week One

·  To introduce the student to the course and its instructor

·  To give the student an opportunity to get acquainted with the rest of the class and share about his/her counseling responsibilities at their own ministry

·  To learn more about the concept of "Ministering to the Whole Person"

·  To begin the exploration of the problem of addiction and the spiritual foundations of recovery.

Week Two

·  To help the student to understand how addiction and recovery relate to the issue of homelessness

·  To introduce the student to the basic principles of the Christian perspective on addiction counseling.

Week Three

·  To continue exploring the basic principles of Christ-centered addiction counseling.

·  To examine the special challenges of counselors working in an urban mission residential program.

Week Four

·  To continue the process of helping the student to understand the problem of alcoholism and special strategies for helping the alcoholic in a residential program.

·  To introduce the concepts related to effective goal-setting for residential program participants with an emphasis on developing realistic expectations for each individual client.

·  To study the issues related to counseling the addict on a more in-depth basis.

·  To introduce the student to the Gallup Study on Recovery from Homelessness and its implications for ministry counseling.

·  To help the student to understand the concept of "Continuum or Care."

Week Five

·  To further examine the critical structural elements necessary for a successful residential addiction recovery program

·  To conduct a simple program review using principles presented thus far in this course.

·  To examine the theological implications of addiction recovery.

Week Six

·  To introduce the student to the importance of seeking personal recovery along with seeking to help other staff member who may need it.

·  To introduce the students to the counseling issues of adult children of alcoholics and those who have grown up in dysfunctional family situations

·  To investigate some of the most commonly asked questions about Christian Recovery.

Week Seven

·  To help the student to become familiar with procedures and documentation that can be used to organize the counseling process.

·  To introduce the students to the importance of support groups in the aftercare process for clients who residential recovery programs.

Week Eight

·  To introduce the student the principles of program evaluation.

·  To continue the discussion of after care and the need to prepare residential clients to develop strategies for success upon completion of the program.

3.  Write a paper about “Ministering to the Whole Person”
Rev.Vanderbergwrote his article in 1974. This was long before the current growing acceptance of the discipline of Christian counseling and before rise of what has become to be known as the "Christian Recovery Movement". Much has changed in the past 30 years, yet in some ways, the clients we work with may not be all that different.
TheTwelve Core Functionsare the primary criteria used by the certifying bodies throughout the United States in their credentialing of addiction counselors. Read this and see just how much of it meshes with Rev. Vanderberg's idea's.
In light of this context, write a paper of at least five pages that includesyour thoughtson the following:
·  Is "rehabilitation" a good word to use to describe our work with troubled people through Christian ministries?
·  What kind of people are we rehabilitating?
·  Am I equipped to do the job?
·  Have you seen yourself falling into any of the "dangers" common to Christian workers that Rev. Vanderberg mentions?
·  Is rehabilitation really "80% resocialization"?
·  Are Rev. Vanderberg's suggested "Counseling Guidelines" adequate to meet the needs of the clients your ministry works with today?
·  How do the principles Rev. Vanderburg shared related to the Twelve Core Functions, which are a universally accepted outline of the primary duties of modern substance abuse counselors?

God is for the Alcoholicis the all-time best-selling book on alcoholism written from a Christian perspective. It's author, Rev. Jerry Dunn is a man who has overcome addiction in his own life and has helped many to discover a sober life and victorious walk with God.
He is the former director of the People's City Mission in Lincoln, Nebraska. A long-time member of the International Union of Gospel Missions (now AGRM), Jerry served as President of the IUGM from 1971-1973.

For this assignment, write a page of at least five pages that answers the question, "Can Christian counselors accept the medical model of addiction and use some of its assumption in their ministry to addicts?"

Then, write a 3-5 page paper about the importance of comprehensive programming at the urban mission.
Be sure to comment on the recovery program at your ministry in light of the principles shared in the lectures and this week's assigned reading. Note which in areas they are doing well and the areas where you feel some improvement is needed.
For the title of your paper use "Comprehensive Programming"
4.  Take the Midterm Exam.
a)  It is a 25 question that covers all the materials in the first four weeks of the course.
