DRESS AND APPEARANCE (CCSD REGULATION 5131)
Jack and Terry Mannion Middle School encourages its students to “dress for respect.” Personal appearance should not disrupt or detract from the educational environment of the school. The school administration has the right to designate which types of dress or appearance are not acceptable. District and school policy:
- Requires students to wear shoes with soles. House slippers and shoes with wheels are not permitted. No flip flops.
- All clothing must be sufficient to conceal any and all undergarments. No skin will show between bottom of shirt/blouse and top of pants or skirts at any time. All sleeveless shirts must have straps at least three inches wide. Prohibited tops include, but are not limited to, crop tops, tank tops, strapless, low‐cut clothing, clothing with slits, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage.
- Requires that all shorts, skirts and dresses be a minimum of fingertip length. Remember: Clothing (short skirts) slip up when walking.
- Prohibits pants/shorts from sagging nor may any pants be worn which allow shorts or underwear to show. Pants/shorts must be worn at the hip and be no more than one size larger than what the student would normally wear.Pants/shorts may notbe torn or ripped above the knee (patches are not allowed). Pajamas/lounge pants are not permitted.
- Headgear (hats, hoods, caps, bandanas, hair grooming aids, etc.) is not permitted on campus except for designated school approved uniforms, special events, authorized athletic practices, documented medical conditions, bona fide religious reason, or CCSD/school sanctioned activities. Headwear may not be carried.During winter weather, stocking caps or beanies may be worn until entering classroom areas.
- Prohibits slogans or advertising on clothing which by their controversial or obscene nature disrupt the educational setting. This includes any clothing which advertises tobacco, alcoholic beverages, drugs, racial bigotry, sexual activities, promotes hate, or references weapons.
- Any clothing, jewelry, buttons, and/or accessories that promote illegal or violent conduct, or affiliation with groups that promote illegal or violent conduct such as, but not limited to, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia, or clothing that contains threats are prohibited.
- Spiked or studded clothing, jewelry, and/or accessories are prohibited. This includes facial piercing or jewelry on the nose, lips, and eyebrows. Piercings may not be covered by any type of bandage. For safety reasons, gauges with sharp backs are not allowed.
- Requires that coats, mittens/gloves, and scarves must be removed before entering the classroom. No trench coats are allowed. Hooded sweatshirts must be worn with the hood off while on campus. Gang related clothing of any sort is not allowed. As gang fashion can change, this list of concerns will fluctuate as the administration becomes aware of the changes as provided by the CCSD Gang Unit.
- Hairstyle must allow student’s eyes to be visible.
- No sunglasses. If sunglasses are worn while walking to school, they must be put away before 8:00 a.m. until 2:11 p.m.
NOTE: Any dress and/or appearance indicative of fashion or fad which is disruptive to the educational environment of the school may be determined as inappropriate by the administration. THE PRINCIPAL SHALL RETAIN THE AUTHORITY TO GRANT EXCEPTIONS FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS AND/OR SPECIAL CONDITIONS.
