FREO CRANES COMES TO THE RESCUE
The mast at HMAS Perth 1 Memorial/ Navy League Headquarters has been demolished due to its deteriation and safety issues. Freo Cranes generously donated their time and use of a crane to take the mast down section by section. The mast will be replaced by a 12 metre aluminium flag pole with gaff and cross arms. This will take place in the next few weeks.
ANC Passing Out Parade
The Annual Passing Out parade for the Westralia Flotilla
was held recently at Leeuwin Barracks. Units From across the state and interstate attended.
From the Grapevine
- The former HMAS Sydney is in tow to Henderson Common use facility for dismantling this is anticipated to take twenty two days to reach Henderson from Sydney.
- HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Canberra are at present havingpropulsion issues and HMAS Adelaide is now in drydock in Sydney whilst HMAS Canberra is undertaking trials with a temporay fix to her propulsionPods.
- The executive committee has approved funds of $15000 to rectify the septic system at HMAS Perth 1 Memorial. The system has not been upgraded since first being installed some fifty plus years ago.
- As noted in the newsletter the committee has also approved expenditure of $4500 to replace the mast at HMAS Perth1 Memorial with a twelve meter flagpole which is being designed and supplied by Taskers.NU Ship Hobart the first of the new generation Air Defence Destroyers will be hands over to the Royal Australian Navy in about five weeks.
- Discussions between the executive and ANC unit TS Perth are investigating further maintenance at the HMAS Perth 1 Memorial to bring it up to a standard that is acceptable to the community and the league. Future improvements will feature a memorial garden at the front of the building and assistance in preparing a brief on up grading the memorial status. At the moment the memorial is registered with the East Fremantle City Council and the state RSL.
- The President Peter and Bev Jarvis together with the Hon Secretary Jim O’Neill recently attended a Fleet Cocktail evening on the new HMAS Adelaide whilst she was berthed at Fremantle. The ship is magnificent are will be a valued asset to the defence of Australia.
