Worksheet #4 - Needed Modifications, if any, for Curriculum Alignment
Goal: Degree programs are coherent in that they demonstrate 1) sequencing, 2. progression or increasing complexity, and 3) linkages between and among program core courses.
Curriculum Modifications Needed / Why Needed?Courses in music fundamentals (Theory / Aural Training / Class Piano) need to be aligned so that the application of a skill learned in one class is immediately applied in another / These foundation courses are fundamental to the development of layered courses in upper division essential to program outcomes
Cross – examination of theory / Aural skills / Class Piano in one single comprehensive exam / Reinforcement of information
Communication – perhaps using bulletin boards – between faculty (esp. adjuncts) needs improvement so that applied faculty can know what is going on in the music fundamental courses (Theory / Aural Skills). / Immediate feedback to students on the practical application of subject matter being studied in “theory”
Ensemble and Applied Instruction needs to be more related to the theoretical subjects – teachers need to be more involved in the overall curriculum evaluation / Further reinforcement through application of the principles learned in theoretical subject areas
Development of masterclass teaching situation / Students need to learn to think like teachers. Demonstration by a master instructor will illustrate to students the fundamentals of applied teaching pedagogy
