Norwich Theatre Royal is East Anglia’s premier theatre, presenting a high quality mix of drama, musicals, opera, dance, comedy, music, children’s and family shows all year round. In an average year it sells some 400,000 tickets for around 410 performances of nearly 100 separate events, averaging 75% of capacity. With 1300 seats, the Theatre Royal is the largest venue in Norfolk, and plays a very active part in the cultural life of the region.

The theatre is a registered charity (No. 262259) with education as its focus. Any surplus generated is dedicated to improving the theatre’s facilities and to supporting an extensive Learning & Participation programme. This is a key role in delivering that L&P programme, working on specific projects as described below, whilst the current post holder is on maternity leave.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title:Education Manager (Projects) – Maternity Cover

Reporting to:Learning and Participation Manager

Salary:£27,747 per annum

Hours:37.5 hours per week between Monday and Friday, exact days to be variable and mutually agreed. Some evening and weekend working will be necessary (overtime is not payable for these hours, but time off in lieu is given)

Holiday Entitlement:4 weeks p.a. plus statutory holidays

Notice period:6 weeks

Objective

To support the Learning and Participation Manager and other colleagues in the promotion, administration and execution of educational projects within the the work of the Learning and Participation Department.

Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Deliver the Norfolk Schools Project (November opera partnership project with primary schools) including teacher’s workshops, school residencies, workshops for participants and the NTR production. Initial project planning already in place.
  • Manage NTR’s operational delivery of activities and resources for the Umbrella Trust.
  • Co-ordinate the Arts Award across the education projects and activities within NTR, including delivery of a weekly Arts Awards club at Stage Two.
  • Management of other theatre based projects for schools as directed by the Learning and Participation Manager
  • Deliver learning and participation projects associated with visiting companies.
  • Assist with schools activities as directed by the Education Manager (schools).

Staff Management

  • Provide line management for Education and Learning Assistant
  • Liaise with the Learning and Participation Manager when recruiting freelancers and associate artists to deliver projects.
  • Support freelancers and associate artists administratively and artistically to enable them to deliver projects to the highest standard.

General

  • Assist to brief theatre staff on education work
  • Assist with informing schools about education activities
  • Maintain good relationships with visiting companies
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that educational activities are delivered safely and in accordance with NTR company policies.
  • Act as Duty Manager within Stage Two where required.
  • Support all learning and participation activities and act at all times in the best interest of the theatre and the participants.
  • Liaise with NTR marketing department regarding learning and participation projects
  • Act at all times in the best interests of NTR

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working with schools or within the education sector, to produce and manage creative projects.
  • General understanding of the national curriculum.
  • Experience of working with and managing strategic educational partnerships and relationships.
  • An good understanding of Arts Awards and ability to support its delivery.
  • Experience of line managing direct reports.
  • Experience of delivering arts workshops for children and young people.
  • Experience of delivering CPD for teachers.

Skills and Attributes

  • An interest in the arts, education and learning
  • Positivity, flexibility and enthusiasm with the desire to engage and inspire young people
  • Good team working skills with ability to lead projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications and Training

  • Car owner with full licence is desirable as some travel is required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (weekends and evenings) when required.
