SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT RETIREMENT AND BENEFITS?

Bring your lunch and something to drink, and join us for a series of Learn at Lunch meetings in April and May regarding retirement from UNMC. All meetings will be held at 12:00 noon in the Eppley Amphitheater (Room 3010 in the Eppley Science Hall).

See if you know the answers to the following questions:

1)  When can I retire from UNMC? Are there any circumstances under which I can access my basic retirement plan or SRA if I’m still working at UNMC so I might partially retire? How much is retiree insurance? How can I strategize with COBRA to retire and pay less for insurance? What types of unused leave will be paid? (Join us for the “Who Wants To Be A Retiree?” workshop).

2)  I’ve got my financial information sorted out for retiring. What other issues have to be considered for me to have a successful retirement? What pieces am I missing? (Find out at the “So I’m Retired – Now What?” workshop.)

3)  How much can I expect from Social security? I hear that full retirement age is no longer age 65. How do I find out when I can take full social security? Any benefit to drawing at age 62? Would there be an advantage to taking social security based on my spouse’s income rather than my own? What about social security disability? (Attend the “Everything You Wanted to Know About Social Security” workshop.)

4)  Are they increasing the age for Medicare eligibility, or is it still age 65? When do I apply for Medicare? How does a Medicare supplement plan work? What is a Medicare Advantage plan? Do I really need the prescription drug coverage? What about the “donut hole”? Will I be required to prove insurability to obtain a Medicare supplement plan? Do I need Medicare Part B and Part D if I’m still working after I’ve attained age 65? I’m so confused – how do I decide which Medicare options and supplement plans are right for me? (If you don’t know these answers, attend the “Medicare Made Easy” workshop.)

5)  What happens if I die with no will? How are my assets distributed? What are living wills and trusts? How much are estate taxes, and is there a way to lessen the impact? If I’m seriously ill or injured, who will make medical decisions for me? Come to the “Wills, Living Wills, and Trusts” workshop to get some great information.

6)  I’m ready to retire. What are some available income strategies? Do I have to take a lifetime annuity? Can I use a combination of different payment options? How can I project my needs? What options does a beneficiary have if I die while still actively working? Or if I die when drawing benefits? What about taxes? How long can I put off accessing my retirement funds after retiring? What retirement planning software or advice is available? (Join TIAA/CREF at the “Getting Ready for Retirement” workshop or Fidelity at the “Fundamentals of Retirement Income Planning” workshop for help in planning the financial aspects of retiring).
