WHY:Now in its fifth successful year, the San Francisco Irish Film Festival is a
celebration of new Irish cinema. In the last few years we have screened: “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” (Ken Loach)- winner of the Palme D’Or at the 2006 Cannes Film, Martin McDonagh’s “Six Shooter,” which received an Academy Award, and Ken Wardorp’s “Undressing My Mother” which brought home the European Film Award and “Adam and Paul” which received the top prize at the Venice film festival. The festival also co-presented “Once” (John Carney) -winner of audience award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, with the San Francisco International Film Festival.
This year, the San Francisco Irish Film Festival has broadened ties with the Irish film community by co-founding an organization called Irish Film America (IFA). The new organization is dedicated to screening new Irish film in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. IFA hopes to provide filmmakers with a platform from which they can launch new film throughout West Coast. The first project for the IFA will be set up a new Los Angles Irish Film Festival that will take place at the Clarity Theatre in Beverly Hills from October 3-5.
