EFFECTIVE SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELORS

MANAGING THE COUNSELING ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT

1. Makes appropriate decisions in crisis situations.

2. Maintains efforts to reach objectives and meet deadlines.

3. Is readily available as a resource to those who need help (students, parents, teachers, administrators).

4. Assists school staff in complying with state/district programs, regulations and administrative procedures.

5. Develops and maintains cooperative interpersonal relationships with faculty, staff, and community.

6. Communicates effectively orally and in writing both within and outside the school and school district.

7. Plans and evaluates effectiveness of counseling program and identifies opportunities to improve counseling unit's performance.

8. Creates a climate conducive to counseling and which promotes the dignity and worth of all persons.

9. Assists principal and staff in appropriate phases of local school educational program planning.

10. Serves as chairperson or active member of Schoolbased Admissions and Release Committee in implementing PL 94142.

11. Assumes responsibility for administration of the school in the absence of the principal as required.

12. Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal to insure the smooth operation of the school.

PROVIDING STUDENT SERVICES:

13. Interacts with students in a professional manner.

14. Adheres to prescribed procedures relating to the confidentiality of information of students.

15. Provides personal, social, educational and developmental counseling for individuals and groups.

16. Provides preventative and crisis counseling services.

17. Plans and supervises administration of specified tests; interprets test results for students.

18. Maintains current, accurate, and complete confidential student records.

19. Registers, orients, and schedules all students into appropriate classes and makes necessary scheduled adjustments to meet individual needs.

20. Certifies students' progression toward graduation; e.g., calculates accumulated credits, grade point averages, and class standings, records test information and determines promotion and retention decisions.

21. Provides recommendations to colleges, postsecondary schools, scholarship sources and employers; assists in maintenance of the college entrance testing program, and provides scholarship and financial aid information to students.

PROVIDING INFORMATIONAL SERVICES(STAFF, PARENTS, COMMUNITY):

22. Cooperates with colleagues and parents in the best interest of students.

23. Interacts with staff and parents in a professional manner.

24. Shares decisionmaking and problemsolving with administrators, students, parents and teachers.

25. Provides consultation and information to teachers and parents as appropriate.

26. Interprets student records to parents or guardians upon request.

27. Serves as liaison for other schools, resource personnel, and for outside agencies providing special services.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

28. Participates in professional growth activities keeping abreast of current developments in counseling/guidance.

29. Demonstrates interest in professional growth on the job.

30. Assists school staff in complying with state/district programs, regulations and administrative procedures.

31. Is punctual to and maintains regular attendance at work and at meetings.

32. Adheres to the professional code of ethics.
