MHRC Charles Barkley Excellence in Mentoring Award

The UAB Minority Health Health DisparitiesResearch Center (MHRC) willpresentthe Charles Barkley Excellence in Mentoring Award tofaculty members who mentor:1) undergraduate students, 2) graduate students or post-doctoral fellows,or 3) junior faculty scholars. It is anticipated that three mentors will be selected to receive an award.
The $500 award will recognize faculty members who have provided outstanding mentoring and have contributed substantially to the career development and retention of students and scholars. The award recipients will be honored at the annual UAB Health Disparities Research Symposium on May 3, 2017.
We invite all MHRC Training and Research Program students/scholars to nominate candidates for this unique honor.
Who Is Eligible
The mentor nomineemust have mentored one or more MHRC Training and Research Programawardees, scholarsor students from:
- MHRC Summer Enrichment Program (SEP)
- Manos Juntas Hispanic/Latino Student Mentoring Program
- Summer Cancer Research Training Program (SCRTP, sponsored by MSM/TU/UAB Partnership)
- Health Disparities Research Training Program (HDRTP, sponsored by MSM/TU/UAB Cancer Partnership, ASU/UAB Cancer Partnership,DSN,RCMAR, MHRC, and others)
- MHRC Charles Barkley Health Disparities Research Awardsand other MHRC Research Awardsrecipients
Criteria for Award
In a written statement, please describe how the mentor has been outstanding in supporting, encouraging, and promoting your research education, professional and personal development, and career. Please provide specific examples and stories of the nominee’s mentoring qualities and effectiveness, such as:
- providing active research guidance and intellectual leadership;
- developing students’/scholars’ research skills, teaching abilities, presentation and writing skills, skills in preparation of grant and fellowship applications, etc.;
- having clear expectations and holding students/scholars to high standards;
- providing opportunities for collaboration or sponsoring students/scholars in the academic and professional community;
- advocating and guiding in administrative, organizational, and professional or career matters
- being a successful role model;
- showingconcern for students/scholars as people and supporting their personal development;
- showing long-term commitment to mentoring and ability to change roles as the mentee develops.
