FIL Emeritus Award
The FIL Emeritus Award is given to an individual who has retired her/his status as an International Official and is recognized for their exemplary contributions to officiating. The recipient of this award has served as a role model and has upheld the highest standards of professionalism.
The award will be used to:
- Recognise officials who have contributed Internationally to the growth and development of officiating whilst setting the highest standard as an official themselves
- Identify those international officials who may continue to assess, train and act as an Off Field Official at FIL world events or FIL approved* events having retired from International on field competition
Selection criteria
To be eligible to be awarded an emeritus rating, the official must:
1. have held an international rating for at least eight years (or less in exceptional circumstances); and
2. have officiated or been an ‘Off Field Official’ at a FIL world event or FIL approved* event under the guidance of the FIL Officiating Chair; and
3. becurrently involved* in lacrosse in the country where they reside; and
4. be in good standing with their member Association (National Governing Body); and
5. pass the FIL Rules Test annually
Process of application and appointment
There are three ways to apply for/be awarded an Emeritus rating:
- An applicant may be appointed directly by the FIL Officiating Chair.
- A member country may submit an Emeritus Application form.
- An official may submit an Emeritus Application form on their own behalf.
Supporting documentation, meeting all five selection criteria, is required.
Length of appointment
The award is for a period of five years
An emeritus official may apply for renewal of the emeritus status prior to the end of their five-year appointment.
Requirements/commitment during appointment
Upon receiving the award, the official must, within the period of the award,
a)work at least once as an Off-Field Official at a FIL world event or FIL approved* event; or
b)deliver training at an FIL approved clinic; and
c)maintain their personal information in the FIL Officials database
Nomination Process
- The FIL Officiating Chair shall make the call for the FIL Emeritus Award nominations by June 1of each year.
- Nomination forms must be received by the FIL Officiating Chair by July 1of each year.
- Nomination formswill be reviewed by the Officiating Committee. Nominations that meet the criteria will be recommended to the FIL Sector who will vote on the suitability of the candidate.The FIL Officiating Chair & FIL Sector Director shall present the award to the successful nominee(s) at an appropriate FIL Event.

Approved = any event that plays with FIL rules and the FIL Event Bylaws
Currently involved = (active, engaged or ongoing)within the past two years
Good standing = provision of a written reference from the member Association/s (National Governing Body)
