ASENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF HAROLD LEE NEWSOME OF GREENVILLE AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Harold Newsome on December 19, 2016; and
Whereas, born September 23, 1927, in Greenville to the late Yancy and Lillie Sullivan Newsome, the young Harold was educated in the Greenville public school system, graduating from Sterling High School in 1944; and
Whereas, he went on to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, before being called to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he completed his education at South Carolina State College, where he received a bachelor of science in business administration and later a master’s degree; and
Whereas, in 1952, Harold Newsome married the love of his life, Rosa Stevens. They enjoyed an astounding sixtyfour years of marriage, some ofwhich they spent travelling around the world to Europe, South America, Asia, China, Africa, Australia, the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, and Canada, in addition to many states throughout the USA; and
Whereas, Harold Newsome began an illustrious career in education at Sterling High, where he taught many subjects. After later serving as assistant principal at Hillcrest and Mauldin high schools, he retired in 1987; and
Whereas, he was a respected member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, NEA, and SCTA; and
Whereas, Harold Newsome is survived by his beloved wife, Rosa Stevens Newsome, numerous family members, and many friends. He will be missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Harold Lee Newsome of Greenville and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Rosa Stevens Newsome.
