SCIENCE 8Year End Project GuidelinesMr. Birt
WHAT is the project?
- You must do this project individually.
- You may choose one of the topics provided and follow the associated guidelines. An alternative topic may be considered, subject to teacher approval. It is recommended that you choose the last topic on electromagneticradiation technologies in order to complete the project in 4 periods.
- Once you have chosen your topic, a brief proposal and outline must be submitted to the teacher for approval before you begin. See Part 1 – The Project Outline (on back). This is DUE: Tuesday, May 3
- You are expected to do your own research. You may use the textbook, the internet, and the library, as well asinformation from relevant organizations or direct interviews.
- All sources must be correctly documented in your project in a Bibliography.
- All information provided in your report must be in your own words.
- One period per cycle will be scheduled for the library and computer lab for the project. The class will be completing the Light unit during the other periods of the cycle. Any other project time needed will be outside of class. If you miss a class when we are in the computer lab, you must make up the time on your own (homework club or at home).
- Computer lab Schedule: 8A Thur. April 28, 8B+8C Fri. April 29; 8A,B,C Tue. May 3; 8A,B,C Wed. May 11; 8A,B,C Thur. May 19
- You choose the format of the project. This may be a powerpoint presentation, a poster, a brochure, a model with documentation, a written report, a video, or some combination of these formats.
- Any diagrams must be labeled and explained.
- You are expected to provide your own necessary supplies or equipment if you are doing an experiment, poster, model, video, etc.
HOW will the project be graded?
- Evaluation of the project will be based on:
- effort
- content and demonstrated knowledge of the topic
- organization of your report
- creativity
- neatness and attention to detail
- class presentation
PROJECT DUE:Friday, May 20
Other Considerations:
- The Light Unit Test is planned for Wednesday, May 18.
- Beginning in June, there will be project presentations and preparation for the Final Exam.
Science 8Year End Project: Part 1 – The Project Outline Mr. Birt
- After you have read the list of topics and selected your topic you are ready to do your project outline. This is a list of the key steps (for example: gathering materials, preparing a poster, making a model, etc.) and information topics you need to research or gather.
- Use Microsoft WORD to create an outline for your project.
- The heading of your Project Outline should include
- a title (eg. Electromagnetic Radiation Technologies - Motion Sensors),
- the course and class (eg. Science 8A),
- your first and last name and
- the date.
- The main points of your Project Outline are based on the requirements of the project topic and should include a list of the keysteps (for example: gathering materials, preparing a poster, making a model, etc.) and the headings of information you need to research or gather. The outline should guide you in completing your project and in sticking to a schedule to meet the project deadline.
For example, the outline for “Electromagnetic Radiation Technologies - Motion Sensors” should include the following points:
- The technology chosen (eg. motion sensors) - where it is used, who uses it, what it does
and/or what it is used for.
- Description (or facts) of the chosen technology - main part(s), what it looks like, its size(s)
generally, a picture
- How the technology works - the type of electromagnetic radiation it uses, generally how it
works (conceptually), labeled diagram
- History of the technology – when invented, stages of development or significant
improvements, projected enhancements
- Benefits of the technology
- Hazards or risks of the technology
- Recommendations for safe use of the technology
- Bibliography
- Your Project Outline should be saved with an appropriate file name such as “s8yearendprojectproject-yourfirstnamelastname”. It must be stored on the Student R Drive, in a folder called “Science 8X” (X = your class section A, B or C)
- After your Project Outline is completed and saved, do a Google search on your topic to find 3 or 4 appropriate web sites.
- As you locate web sites having some of the required information in an understandable form, copy the web site address onto the bottom of your Project Outline. You must have these for your Bibliography and you will need to refer to them again. BE SURE THE INFORMATION IS CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND - If the web site is too technical and complex, then do not save its address or use it.
- After you have added all essentialweb site addresses to the outline, save the Project Outline again.
- Congratulations! You have completed part one of your project – The Project Outline.
