“The Social Studies Frameworks and Individual Design Models:
A Workshop for School Librarians and Social Studies Teachers” with Claire Machosky
The development of the Social Studies Toolkit Project with its emphasis on research and analysis provides a vehicle for School Librarians and Social Studies teachers to collaborate. The Social Studies Framework requires students to apply Common Core reading and writing skills to information texts and primary sources. The newly developed IDMs, Individual Design Models, require students to use higher level thinking skills to research and interpret information. This workshop will focus on how School Librarians and Social Studies Teachers can work together to address The New York State Social Studies Framework including the Four Dimensions of Informed Inquiry found in the National Council of Social Studies NCSS Inquiry Arc and the C3 Framework. Participants will examine how Key Ideas and Conceptual Understanding form the basis for the curriculum Field Guide and Toolkit. Participants will review two of the recently released Toolkit Individual Design Models - IDMs - that were created by the Tool Kit Project in order to understand the role of Research and Primary Source Documents in Social Studies instruction. Teams composed of School Librarians and Social Studies Teachers will use the IDM template to formulate compelling questions and create lessons that include research, analysis and comprehension of content while addressing Common Core State Standards.
