What You Need to Know

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Grades K-8

Standards, Shifts, and Progressions... Huh?? The new terminology associated with the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics can make the task of becoming familiar and comfortable with them a daunting one. These workshops can help! Each of the three sessions will explore a different facet of the Common Core State Standards for Math. Participants will engage in activities that will examine the topics thoroughly while gaining an understanding of how each applies to their individual classrooms.

Day 1: May 15, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Content Standards and the Shifts

How and Why Things Have Changed

This workshop will examine the “Crosswalk” between the 2005 NYS Core Curriculum and the Common Core State Standards for Math. The changes in structural organization and process and content domains, as well as the shifts in math instruction will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to look closely at how these changes will affect their grade level

Day 2: May 22, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Standards for Mathematical Practice

How They Support Best Practice

This workshop will examine the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The intent of each SMP will be discussed, as well as what each practice “looks like” in the math classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to create a reference guide they can use for incorporating the Standards for Mathematical Practices in their lesson planning.

Day 3: May 29, 2013 Time: 4pm – 6:30 pm

The Progressions Through the Grade Levels

Why Seeing the Whole Picture is Key

This workshop will examine the progression of each content domain through the grade levels. Participants will have the opportunity to see exactly how their grade level standards “fit” with the grades before and after. They will gain valuable insight into the level of skill and understanding they can expect their students to come in with, as well as the levels they should attain.
