1.  HOST ORGANISATION OVERVIEW

Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI), is a South African non-governmental organisation working since 1994 with the primary goal of protecting and fostering the right to freedom of expression.

The primary objectives of the organisation are: to fight for and defend the right to freedom of expression, to oppose censorship in all its forms, to fight for the right of equal access to information and knowledge and, to promote access to media and a free press.

2.  ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

This position is critical to FXI as the volunteer will assist with capacity building through their international experience.

The volunteer will play a key role in the organisation's medium-term resource mobilisation plan. Part of this plan involves developing a sustained fundraising and resource mobilisation presence within the organisation by building the skills of existing staff in the management committee. Part of this role will be building on the organisation's ability to market itself as a provider of services to the private sector and harnessing existing expertise and networks in order to generate revenue.

There is a local volunteer available for mentorship from the volunteer.

The requested position and organisation are aligned with DFAT’s strategic focus for South Africa.

3.  ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES:

·  Research, develop and submit successful grant applications for projects, campaigns and resources that support the work and objectives of FXI while mentoring local staff

·  Help identify project funding for FXI through national and international grants programs

4.  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE VOLUNTEER

In consultation with their line manager and relevant stakeholders, Australian volunteers complete a work plan in the first three (3) months of their assignment. The duties below are an indication of the type of work that may be involved in meeting the Assignment Objectives:

• Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of donors (foundations, corporates and individuals;

• Develop and submit together with programme staff, grant applications to generate funds for the organisation – mainly core funding;

• Create a strategy for tracking proposals and reports for all major donors;

• Develop a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the organisation that could be easily followed after the volunteer’s departure.

Hours & Days of Employment

From 8:30 am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

The expectation is that the volunteer will work the equivalent of a 5 day week to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

Leave Entitlements

Same conditions and terms as local colleagues apply, including national holidays. However, as a minimum, volunteers will accrue 1 week of leave for each 3 months of work.

Language Skills and Level Required

English is mainly used at work.

AVI provides language support to volunteers after orientation.

7.  LIVING AS A VOLUNTEER

The Organisation is located in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. Auckland Park is home to a mix of nationalities and cultures, and the suburb is well known as the location of the South African Broadcasting Corporation headquarters.

Public transport in Johannesburg is generally reliable; Both private Taxis (small vans) and public buses ply the routes within the city, and surrounding areas. The train – known as the Gautrain is an 80-kilometre mass rapid transit railway system in Gauteng Province, which links Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo International Airport. It was built to relieve the traffic congestion in the Johannesburg–Pretoria traffic corridor and offer commuters a viable alternative to road transport, as Johannesburg has limited public transport infrastructure.

Good second hand cars can be easily accessed and would range between AUD 5,000 to AUD 7,000.

The volunteer will need to buy a mobile 3G card and independently subscribe to an internet provider to use at their area of residence. There are a number of mobile and internet providers that offer high speed, high quality, low cost and easy to use Internet connection.

The FXI will provide a laptop as well as internet access.

8.  ALLOWANCES & SUPPORT

These allowance levels are based on the Cost of Living in the host country location. Allowances will be reviewed periodically and may increase or decrease. Volunteers will be given notice of any change to the allowance level.

AUD $1650.00 per month

Accommodation Allowance

AUD $750.00 per month

Housing

Available property to lease ranges from townhouses, flats and stand-alone houses at the cost of AUD 600 to AUD 750 per month depending on the size.

Personal Circumstances Constraints

We are NOT able to accept applications from people with the following personal circumstances due to security, cultural, legal or visa restrictions in this location:

·  Applicants with a criminal record where a criminal conviction may be relevant to the inherent requirements of the assignment.

South African Visa requirement:

In accordance with new Regulations set out by the South Africa High Commission, an applicant for the visa you will require (B1-1738) must submit their application in person in Canberra, 8 weeks prior to their departure date. AVI will cover the cost for applicants to attend their appointments at the South Africa High Commission and organise all required appointments for visa submission. Applications take up to 8 weeks to process. As part of your application, you will be required to submit your passport. Therefore, you will need to reside in Australia for this period and no overseas travel should be arranged during that time.

As a mandatory requirement, applicants who have lived overseas for 12 months or more, since the age of 18, will need to provide police clearance certificate/s in respect of each country the applicant lived. AVI is not able to process visa applications without verifiable documented evidence.
