Job Title: Building Inspector II (DOE, may be filled as an Inspector I)

Department: Community & Economic Development

Reports To: Community & Economic Development Director

Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Wage: $16.82-$22.70 per hour

Close Date: December 15th, 2014 at 5PM

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for providing support to the engineering, architectural, construction community and other citizens through the enforcement, interpretation, and application of building, electric, plumbing, zoning, special use permit and other City ordinances.

General Duties:

·  Conduct plumbing, electrical, building and mechanical code inspections of commercial and residential sites to ensure compliance with all building construction and fire codes,

·  Provide assistance and recommendations to architects, engineers and contractors concerning alternate methods of construction to meet the intent of each related code,

·  Respond to requests and inquiries and provide information regarding Syracuse City Code while keeping a good relationship,

·  Continue education of codes and city ordinances,

·  Resolve resident complaints regarding compliance with City codes and ordinances,

·  Maintain a productive working environment which includes, but is not limited to, a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers and the public,

·  Other duties as assigned by the Building Official and Community and Economic Development Director.

Required Skills and Abilities:

·  Knowledge of municipal codes, ordinances and related statutes applicable to assigned duties

·  Knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire and state codes

·  Knowledge of code compliance methods and inspection techniques

·  Skilled in handling multiple projects with interruptions

·  Skilled in prioritizing and organizing workload to meet deadlines

·  Ability to become familiar with industry specific terminology and symbology

·  Ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts or other visual aids

·  Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry and trigonometry

·  Ability to deal effectively with customers

·  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community with tact and dignity

·  Ability to physically perform concrete structural inspections

The employee is occasionally required to sit, used hands to finger, handle or feel, climb or balance, climb ladders, enter crawl spaces, exert force, manipulate hand or foot controls and enter data into a computer terminal, PC or other device and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Minimum Qualifications:

·  Must be 18+ years of age

·  Graduation from High School or GED

·  Two to three (2-3) years of experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Certifications and/or Licensures

·  Valid State of Utah Drivers License Class “D”

·  Certified in one or more areas of International Code Council specialization: IRC electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building, plan checking. Building certification preferred.

·  State of Utah Inspector License
