The Finance Club would like to congratulate you on your choice to attend the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. The first year of business school is often the most challenging. I – THE FINANCE CLUB

The Finance Club is a student-run organization that provides members interested in finance careers (or finance-related) the resources, tools, and guidance needed to successfully reach their career goals. Some of the Club’s activities include:

1 – Describing the various finance related career paths and what they mean.

2 – Conducting weekly meetings and breakout sessions in which we cover topics like the recruiting calendar, questions to expect, and technical skills.

3 - Organizing “Meet the Intern” events to learn about the Class of 2006 summer internships in addition to “Alumni Panels” and “Women on Wall Street Panels”.

4 – Planning and executing professional forums, such as the Wall Street Forum (WSF) which takes place in New York during Fall Break, that allow students to network with major corporations in their finance area of interest. In addition to the WSF, the Finance Club hosts the Corporate Finance Forum and will be introducing the Chicago Forum this year.

5 – Providing members with a Finance "course-pack”, an invaluable resource for students pursuing careers across all areas of banking – investment banking, sales and trading, research, and private wealth management.

6 – Hosting training sessions on accounting, valuation, and financial modeling that supplement the Michigan’s Core curriculum and are essential for the technical component of the finance interview process.

7 – Developing your interview skills through “mock interviews”, such as “Super Saturdays,” and resume reviews.

8 – Providing a “Roadmap” and “best practices” for landing a job in finance.

III- WHAT YOU CAN DO OVER THE SUMMER

·  Conduct a career self-assessment (http://www.bus.umich.edu/StudentCareerServices/SelfAssessment/) to determine whether a finance career is appropriate for you

·  Work on your resume - it does not have to be perfect prior to arriving on campus, but a working draft will save time during the very hectic months of September and October

·  Use different sources (Internet, friends, colleagues, etc.) to begin thinking about the pros and cons of different finance functions (corporate finance, investment banking, S&T, research, private wealth management, private equity) as well as how finance fits into other career paths (consulting, marketing, etc…)

·  Make a habit of reading the Wall Street Journal and similar business publications

·  RELAX!

IV – WHAT NEXT

In the next issue of the Finance Club newsletter, expect to explore the following:

Career Paths: corporate finance, sales and trading, investment banking, private wealth management, and equity research; plus, a listing of available career resources

We hope you are enjoying your summer. Please feel free to reach out to any of the members of the Finance Club Executive Board over the summer if you have any questions.
