WHAT DOES THE SUBJECT INCLUDE?

An emphasis is placed upon the practical skills which include conditioning, shampooing, cutting, blow drying, setting, permanent waving, colouring and neutralising hair.

Our well-equipped commercially run hair salon provides opportunities to develop skills within a commercial setting. You will be expected to build up a client base of paying customers in order in order to complete the practical assessments. This is a key feature of the course.

The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing is based on the National Occupational Standards for Hairdressing. It is a job ready qualification which requires learners to demonstrate in the workplace the skills and knowledge required in the hairdressing industry. This qualification attests to occupational competence and the job readiness of the learner.

Mandatory units

•Cut hair using basic techniques

•Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

•Set and dress hair

•Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety

•Advise and consult with clients

•Style and finish hair

•Change hair colour

•Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation.

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE?

Emphasis is placed on practical skills. Work will be continually assessed throughout the course. The course consists of both theory and practical elements which all have to be passed in order for you to be successful.

This NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing is made up of a minimum of 54 credits, a minimum of 9 units, 8 mandatory units and a minimum of 6 credits from the optional Units. You will also complete a two week block of work based experience during the year to widen personal goals

All courses and treatments take place in our newly refurbished Visage Hair and Beauty Salon. The department now has sauna, steam and shower facilities. The hairdressing salon is equipped with 17 individual bays with adjustable chairs, overhead driers and storage cupboards.

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?

This course is suitable for individuals wishing to work within the Hair industry. You will need to have an interest in Hairdressing and show creative flair.

Please remember note that all assessments take place on fee paying clients, therefore you will need to ensure clients are organised by yourself alongside our clientele to complete hairdressing assessments.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

2 GCSE at Grade 9– 4 (A* to C)

WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I GAIN IF I SUCCESSFULLY
COMPLETE THE COURSE?

This course leads to a City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing and is an excellent practical and theoretical qualification.

OTHER RELEVANT DETAILS?

You will be required to wear a uniform purchased from our supplier; the relevant forms are available from the College reception.

HOW MANY HOURS, WEEKS, YEARS DOES IT LAST?

The course is for one academic year with an option to continue onto NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing. It takes place over approximately 3.5 days a week

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

Uniform bought from College supplier plus your Hairdressing kit – forms available from College during the interview process.

HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS?

Magazine articles on Fashion, Hair and Beauty are also helpful to stimulate your creative flair. A basic word processing course may help to complete coursework.

Also, collect names of prospective paying clients ready for you to start assessments.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing or NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy

The qualification provides progression opportunities for those with intentions of progressing into a supervisory or more technical role or onto a Level 3 qualification.

ARE THERE ANY EXTRA COSTS?

You will need to use hairdressing tools whilst completing practical tasks. For an approximate cost of approximately £150 you can order all the necessary tools before you embark on your hairdressing career. Uniform approximately £60. (You may be able to get help with the costs from the College’s Learner Support Fund. More details are available from the Student Services team)
