Center for Career Development GA Position Description– HESA

Under the direction of the Center for Career Development, the Graduate Assistant for Career Development will support areas of best practice, as defined by the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE), including experiential learning, programming, and student coaching and counseling. This assistantship may provide opportunities to develop skills in: program management, career coaching and counseling, student mentoring and supervision, and organizational development. Individuals with an interest in career development, particularly those who utilized their career center as students, are encouraged to apply. This is a two-year assistantship pending a satisfactory performance after the first year.

The Center for Career Development, supporting graduate and undergraduate students, from all University of Connecticut campuses and academic programs, reports to the Office of the Provost. The Center for Career Development at the University of Connecticut is dedicated to excellence through offering the highest levels of service to our students across all schools, colleges, campuses, and disciplines. We support the intellectual growth of our students by providing programs and experiences that promote self-awareness and engagement as they identify a course of study and pursue opportunities to become contributing members of the state, national, and world communities. Through partnership with employers, alumni, faculty, and staff, we connect students to quality career development resources, internships, experiential learning, and post-graduate opportunities.The Center for Career Development office staff consists of 20 full-time staff and approximately 10 graduate assistants and 25 undergraduate student employees and interns.

Center for Career Development General Duties

  • Participate in training and conduct student résumé critiques and practice interviews each week
  • Present career-related workshops to classes, student organizations, cultural centers, and other departments and entities on campus
  • Write blogs about career-related topics for the departmental website
  • Provide support to program managers for the following department priorities, as determined necessary per semester demands:
  • Career Interns
  • Experiential Learning
  • Student Coaching and Counseling
  • Graduate Students
  • Internal Relations
  • Programming
  • Mentor and/or supervise undergraduate student employees and interns
  • Assist with any task regarding majorCCDevents or presence at University activities, such as career fairs, orientation, open house, and student/staff training
  • Participate in department meetings, strategic planning, departmental training and other committee meetings

Hours/Time Commitment:

  • 20 hours per week, predominantly between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Conduct potential evening presentations, as requested.
  • Attend/work approximately one to two weekend eventsper semester.
