EFFORT DETAILS -- Important:
National Audubon uses our data to estimate bird populations, based on number of birds seen per hour in the field. Please try to be accurate.
In a party table, report start/end times; report hours and miles by mode, rounded to nearest quarter-hour or quarter-mile.
- A party is a group that birds together. If you split up, use another table for the separated group during the time groups are apart.
- A Daylight party in the field (by foot, car, etc.) should report birds seen at feeders in its regular list, not as a Feeder party.
- Hours and Miles by car refer to actual birding from the car, generally not while driving between sites.
- Hours and Miles by foot: 0.5 to 1.5 mph is reasonable if walking. A sea watch, roost count, or stakeout might be 0 miles.
- Out-and-back trips (all modes): count total time but one-way miles only.
- If you use an alternate mode (bike, golf cart, etc), please note the mode in the party table.
- Nocturnal and Feeder parties must be listed separately from Daylight field parties (foot/car/boat).
- Feeders: Report the total hours a feeder was watched. Observers changing/coming/going does not affect the total hours.
- Feeders at separate locations should be listed as as separate parties.
