Course Description

Regents Earth Science is designed to teach the student basic procedures of observation and measurement of the world around us. Regents Earth Science is a course of study designed to encourage students to investigate their world through first hand experiences. Through this program, students should gain new understanding of the Earth and the world around them, and to especially gain a better appreciation of the process of change. Successful completion of a laboratory component is required for admission to the Regents Examination.*

The syllabus contains 9 required units and a prologue of review skills:

  2. Rocks, Minerals & Resources
  3. The Dynamic Crust
  4. Surface Processes & Landscapes
  5. The Earth’s History
  6. Meteorology & Atmospheric Energy
  7. The Water Cycle & Climate
  8. Astronomy
  9. Environmental Awareness

*A laboratory performance test, a component of the Regents Examination, must be completed prior to the written portion of the Regents Examination.

Class Expectations

Students are expected to follow ALL of the guidelines below while in class.

1)Always come prepared for class. This is what you will need to bring with you everyday:

  • Binder
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
  • Earth Science Reference Tables
  • Review Book
  • Pen/Pencil

You will not be allowed to return to your locker for missing supplies.

2)No food or drink allowed in the classroom.

3)Students will only be allowed to go to the lavatory if it is an emergency. Take care of bathroom breaks and getting drinks during the 5 minutes available between classes.

4)No cell phones or ipods allowed in the classroom. If these items are brought to class they will be confiscated.

5)Students are to be in their assigned seats when the bell rings to signal the beginning of class. Students are to remain in their assigned seats until the bell rings to signal the end of class. There is to be no congregating at the classroom door at the end of the period.

6)Do not be late to class. I start class as soon as the bell rings. If you are late 3 times you will receive detention.

7)Students are expected to show respect for the teacher and fellow students. Name calling or teasing will not be tolerated.

8)Students are expected to raise their hands if they have a question, concern, or comment. Please do not call out or speak when others are speaking.

9)All homework assignments must be turned in on time. Late homework assignments will NOT be accepted.

10)If you are absent it is your responsibility to meet with me and find out what you missed and when assignments are due. Check the website.

11) Labs- for this Earth Science Regents class students are required to meet a requirement of 1200 lab minutes. If this requirement is not met students will not be eligible to take the Regents Exam in June. See lab policy below.

Grading Policy

  • HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK (20%)
  • QUIZZES (15%)-“Half-Sheet-Quizzes”- Students are required to answer a BellRinger very frequently throughout the quarter. This serves as a review of the previous days material. The BellRingers will count as a quiz grade.
  • LABS (25%)*
  • UNIT TESTS (40%)

*Lab Policy

•If you do not complete/pass all labs assigned each marking period prior to the end of the marking period you will receive a marking period grade of a 50 regardless of how well you may have done.

•Missing/Failing even just one lab will make you ineligible to take the Regents Exam in June and you will have wasted an entire school year and will have to take Earth Science again next year.

•GET YOUR LABS DONE ON TIME!

•IF YOU ARE ABSENT YOU HAVE 6 DAYS TO MAKE-UP A LAB.

•IF YOU FAIL A LAB IT MUST BE REDONE SO THAT IT IS PASSING OTHERWISE IT DOESN’T COUNT. YOU HAVE 6 DAYS TO MAKE-UP FAILING LABS FROM THE DAY YOU WERE NOTIFIED.

Supply List

In order for you to be successful in Earth Science this year, and receive full credit for labs, the following supplies are needed-

  • 3-ring Binder (NOT A FOLDER)
  • Notebook paper
  • 4 function calculator (Scientific Calculator is acceptable- NYS prohibits the use of a Graphing Calculator on the Regents Exam)
  • Pencils (all labs must be completed in pencil)
  • Pens
  • Ruler (metric)
  • Colored Pencils (at least 6 different colors)
  • Highlighter
  • Box of Tissues (optional-for extra credit)
  • Text/Workbook- Prentice Hall Brief Review- Earth Science: The Physical Setting 2014- to be purchased at the bookstore by ______.
