Hi Dennis,

We must be fairly closely related since I, too, am a descendant of John Swingewood and Jemima Baker. My line of descent is as follows:

John Swingewood (1807-1850) and Jemima Baker (1811-1885)

Patience Swingewood (1841-1924)

Patience Elizabeth Romrell (1868-1942)

Hannah Leona Ossmen (1889-1975)

Margean Waters (1923-2001)

Allen Alger – me

I don’t have any biographies of John or Jemima but one can infer from the facts at hand that the couple converted to Mormonism in England in the 1840s. Their 5th child was born in 1843 and they named him Mosiah, which is a name that has a distinct Mormon flavor. At some point the decision was made to join the Mormon exodus to Utah. In 1849, John must have gone on ahead to establish a home in Utah. Jemima and the kids were left behind with the idea that they would follow later. Jemima was pregnant with their youngest child when John left.

John died in Saint Louis on the way across the continent to Utah. John’s death spoiled the family’s plans to join the Mormons in Utah, but much later Jemima and at least two of her daughters, Patience and Mary Ann, also left England. Patience was in Utah by 1861 when she was married at the age of 19. Mary Ann’s second child was born in England in 1872 and her third child was born in New Jersey in 1873, so the time she when to America is pinpointed pretty well. Her 4th child was born in Utah in 1876. I don’t know if any of Jemima’s other children went to America. Some died young and others became established in England. Jemima did leave England since she died in Utah in 1885. I don’t know when she left England.

All of this is speculation, but I’m pretty confident this is essentially what happened. One reference I have might contain more information about this couple. It is “Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah” p. 1140. I’ve never seen this book. The reference was sent to me by someone donating information to me so I don’t have any other details about the reference.

I’ve attached two documents. One shows everything I know about the ancestors of Patience Swingewood which will include the ancestors of both John Swingewood and Jemima Baker. The other document shows what I know about the descendants of John Swingewood. I hope you will find something useful in these attachments.

If you find errors that you want to correct, or if you would like to send me additional information to fill in the missing data in these family trees, that information would be received with many thanks. I maintain a large and growing genealogical database which now contains over 50,000 records of our relatives. I’m always interested in adding more information and in correcting errors. Whatever information I have is yours for the asking.

Sincerely,

Allen
