A MESSAGE FROM BUD STROTHEIDE, DIRECTOR FCA-MO

I want to SINCERELY THANK Marty Carroll, Larry Lipsitz, Jim Weddle, my wife, Connie, and all of the “Track,” “Rally/Drive”, “Concours/Display” and “Social” committee members who put their time and effort into creating an exciting and fun-filled 2002 “Calendar of Events”.

Because of you, all of us who love Ferrari’s, and want to have fun with our cars and with each other, will now have lots of opportunities over the next twelve months to do so. Your great ideas, enthusiasm, and willingness to help are going to get our new FCA-MO chapter off to a winning start. HERE’S TO A GREAT YEAR AND A GREAT NEW CHAPTER!!

ENZO’S 104TH BIRTHDAY

FEBRUARY 18: Did you know that the family name “Ferrari” is derived from the Latin word for iron?

And did you know that Enzo “came squalling into the world two years before the close of the 19th century. It was a bitter month in northern Italy, and the birth actually occurred on the 18th. However, snow prevented word from reaching the local registry office until two days later, so official records fix it on the 20th. (Excerpted from “Ferrari-The Man and His Machines” by Pete Lyons and The Auto Editors of Consumer Guide).

FORMULA 1 KICK-OFF PARTY

MARCH 2:at 8:00 PM. Bud and Connie Strotheide will host this event at their home at 7749 Maryland Avenue, Clayton, Missouri, 314-726-0601.

Everyone is asked to bring their favorite appeitzer or dessert (Bud and Connie will supply the cocktails), and $10.00 per person to help build up the new chapter treasury.

“SpeedChannel/Speedvision” coverage of the first Formula 1 race of the season (from Australia) will begin at 9:30PM.

PLEASE RSVP BY FEBRUARY 23, 2002 and let our hosts know if you’re coming and what you’re bringing (just so they won’t get too many braunswieger balls!!)

7thANNUAL MISSOURI ENDURANCE RALLY

MARCH 23:Sponsored by the MG Club. This is a fun event – with a little competition thrown in. Cars are timed, and you and your navigator have to figure out the best way to get to a certain location. These rallys are always a blast! Call Larry Lipsitz @ 314-993-1329 for more information.

EASTER SUNDAY CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

MARCH 31: Upper Muny Opera parking area in Forest Park in St. Louis. This is the 40thanniversary of the show, which is hosted by the Horseless Carriage Club of Missouri, and financially sponsored by AAA of Missouri. This is the largest show in St. Louis (600-700 cars), and as many as 60,000 people come to see the impressive array of automobiles.

You can enter your car individually for judging, or just for display. However, if we want our club to participate as a group (and receive a reduction in registration fees), we must have at least 10 cars entered, and entry fees paid by March 15. Call Bud Strotheide @ 314-726-0601 for registration or more details.

LET’S HAVE A FERRARI TURNOUT, AND LET THE PEOPLE OF ST. LOUIS ENJOY OUR BEAUTIFUL CARS AS MUCH AS WE DO! Call Bud.

2002 CARRERA CLASSIC WEEKEND

APRIL 20-21: Gateway International Raceway. The Porsche Club of Greater St. Louis is hosting this annual 2 day event.

Driver education students will learn and practice the techniques of high performance driving on the 1.6 mile road course, that includes a fast infield section, and more than half the banked oval of this motorsports complex.

For those who would like to learn the fundamentals and feel of high speed driving without actually driving, they will offer the “High Performance Experience.” You will attend classroom education sessions, view the course from a corner worker’s station, and ride on the track with an instructor.

At lunchtime, charity laps will be done each day. For a small donation, anyone with a valid drivers license may drive passengers around the road course at moderate speeds.

If you are interested, call Track Chairman, Marty Carroll, as soon as possible @ 314-966-2095. If you cannot make this event, keep in mind that the Porsche Club will sponsor a second driver education event on July 27-28, 2002.

FORMULA 1 SUNDAYS

Several members have mentioned that they thought it would be a lot of fun to get together on Sunday mornings, and watch the F1 races that come from Europe via “Speed Channel”. The pre-race show usually begins at 6:30AM, and the race begins at 7:00AM.

There are 11 European GP’s, so we will need 11 “early-to-rise” volunteers (with “Speed Channel/Speedvision”) to be hosts. A host will probably need to supply lots of coffee, some OJ, maybe some Krispy Kremes, and…well, you get the idea. Following, are the dates and locations of the 11 European races:

Apr 14 San Marino / May 26 Monaco / Jul 28 Germany
Apr 28 Spain / Jun 23 Europe (Nurburgring) / Aug 18 Hungary
May 12 Austria / Jul 7 Great Britain / Sep 1 Belgium
Jul 21 France / Sep 15 Italy

If you would like to volunteer to be a host, contact Liz Vann @ 314-99-2939 or . There will also be a volunteer sign-up sheet at the March 2nd Kickoff Party, so check your calendars before you arrive, and let us know. We already have the first race spoken for..

APRIL 14: 6:30AM. Ian and Claudia Poertner will host the race from SAN MARINO. Their address is 554 Blossomheath Drive, St. Louis, MO 63125. Call314-845-6546to let them know if you’re coming, so Claudia will know how many goodies to have ready.

Check the website for the host of the next “Formula 1 Sunday”, which will air from Spain on April 28.

SPECIAL THANKS

Without the knowledge and expertise of Ian and Claudia Poertner, and the editing skills of Connie Strotheide, this newsletter and our new website would not be possible. However, we need your input! If anyone has news items, special-interest stories, photos, jokes, recipes, or tidbits of any kind to contribute, please send them to Connie Strotheide at 314-726-0601 () or Claudia Poertner @ 314-845-6546 (). I know there are many of our members with lots of stories to tell. How about helping us out by jotting some down, or e-mailing them to us.

….AND FINALLY

Mark your calendars...Larry Lipsitz and his “Rally” committee have informed us that our first FCA-MO “road trip” will be on Sunday May 19, 2002. More details will follow, but we do know that this will be an easy (1½hours each way) drive over some great roads...with some good barbeque, too.
