Role:Mindkit Youth WellbeingTrainer
Type of Role: Voluntary (Travel and Subsistence Expenses paid)
Responsible to:Volunteer Co-ordinator
Time Commitment: Minimum one year, comprised of:
-Accredited Training: Every Wednesday, 9.30am-3.30pm, from 14th September to end December 2016
-After this, at least once a month (any weekday daytimes)
Location:London Borough of Lewisham orBromley
Role Summary:
To co-facilitate Wellbeing Sessions for young people (aged 14-25) at venues across the Borough, including schools, colleges, universities, youth centres and others.
Key Responsibilities:
- Successfully complete the accredited training course for Youth Wellbeing Trainers. You will be fully supported during this time and on successful completion will have achieved a university accredited qualification.
- Observe Wellbeing Sessions during your training period and, if appropriate, take part in these with support.
- Prepare for and co-facilitate a minimum of one Wellbeing Session per month with another Youth Wellbeing Trainer.
- Liaise with the Volunteer Co-ordinator regarding sessions that need facilitating.
- Contribute to the development of the content for the Wellbeing Sessions based on your experience of facilitation.
- Report any concerns arising from the sessions to the Volunteer Co-ordinator and, where appropriate, the contact at the venue.
- Participate in 1-1 touch-basemeetings with the Volunteer Co-ordinator, group volunteer meetings and training on Safeguarding Children and Adults and Appropriate Boundaries.
- Liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator to identify and work towards relevant professional or personal development goals of your choice.
- Take part in Mindfulness practice.
- At all times work in accordance with the organisation’s policies regarding Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding Children, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Confidentiality & Data Protection.
Person Specification
To undertake the role of Voluntary Youth Wellbeing Trainer, you must be able to show that you have the following:
- Experience of having felt stressed, low, anxious or have struggled with your mental or emotionalwellbeing in other ways
- Ability to communicate well with young people
- Skills to effectively facilitate wellbeing sessions
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well in a team
- Understanding of the pressures and stresses facing young people
- Willingness toengage in Mindfulness practice
- Willingness to talk from your own experience in an appropriate way
- Ability to maintain appropriate and professional boundaries
- A commitment to attend a training session of one day per week for the first 15 weeks and to deliver at least one session a month thereafter
You have the option to volunteer in other areas of London where the project takes place but this is not essential. Volunteers are encouraged to take part inresearch undertaken by the project’s external evaluator, Goldsmiths, University of London, around the benefits that they gain from their volunteer role. Information from the research is anonymised.
Accredited Training
The accredited training course will help you develop your training skills and knowledge regarding wellbeing for young people.The training involves fifteen sessions of up to one day, delivered weekly over a four month period. To gain the qualification you will need to attend all training and support sessions and complete three pieces of work: A short presentation, a short written account about what you have learnt and an essay. Accreditation is provided by the University of Middlesex.
