Danygraig is a Co-educational Primary School for children aged 3 – 11 years of age. We teach mainly through the medium of the English language. Welsh-as-a-second-language is also taught. Where other languages are present in the school, every effort is made to ensure communication in that language can be afforded.

The information contained in the following pages is correct in September 2014. It is accepted that some changes may occur from time to time.

Admissions Information -The school has a full Admissions Policy (available on request and published on the school’s website) Admission to the school’s STF (Specialist Teaching Facility) is arranged through the Local Authority.

Admission Arrangements:

Foundation Nursery:

Children are admitted part-time to the Nursery Class in the September following the child’s third birthday. Children are admitted during the year if there are places available.

Foundation Reception:

Children attend the reception classes in September following the child’s fourth birthday.

Following an application for a placement it is important to note that parents must formally accept a placement offer by March (pre-ceding the September of admission). The school currently has an admissions number of 40 pupils per cohort. If applications exceed this number the applicants will be referred to the local authority, which will use admissions criteria guidelines to decide on admission placements.

Prospective parents are invited to contact the school to arrange a visit during school hours, not only to see the Headteacher and staff, but also to sample the working atmosphere of the school.

The parents of prospective pupils receive information regarding the school from March onwards. An admissions meeting for parents of children with statements of SEN will be set up to formalize details. This meeting will usually be attended by a member of the Local Authority (LA), Additional Learning Needs (ALN) staff. Every possible effort will be made to ensure that the needs of children with impairments are considered at the admissions meeting. It is important that the school makes every effort to remove barriers (physical and attitudinal) so that impairment does not necessarily lead to disability, and diversity does not lead to prejudice.

Parents/Guardians of prospective pupils are most welcome to visit the school. Please contact the school office to make arrangements (01792 650946) and a member of staff will be delighted to show visitors around.

Home-School Agreement: The school will present parents/Guardians of newly admitted children with a home/school agreement. The document outlines what the child and parent/guardian can expect from the school in terms of education, Additional Learning Needs provision, attendance, punctuality, safeguarding, equal opportunities, extra-curricular activities and values.

The agreement also clearly sets out what the school will expect from children and parents (for example, good and punctual attendance, good and considerate behaviour, a willingness to abide by school policy and rules, and an expectation to contribute positively to the school community.Safeguarding

Welcome from the Headteacher

Dear Parent,

DanygraigPrimary School is a long established school that has been an important part of the community for a significant period of time.

All parents want a good education for their children. They also want them to be happy and to feel safe and secure. At Danygraig, Safeguarding will always be our main priority.

The school aims to create a caring, happy and secure learning environment for our children to achieve their full potential. At DanygraigPrimary School we believe in giving our children a variety of quality learning experiences that will enable them to meet the numerous challenges and opportunities that will be open to them in later life. We believe in providing a curriculum of opportunities so that learning-

challenges and the needs of more able and talented children are catered for. Skill development and self evaluation will be at the centre of all our learning and teaching. The National Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks underpin all or Teaching and Learning activities.

Staff endeavour to provide a colourful and stimulating environment where children can be challenged and motivated to produce their best. We value our pupils and believe that their time in school should be rewarding and fulfilling. Visitors to the school often comment on the warm welcome they receive and the politeness and courtesy of our pupils. Good manners, courtesy and politeness are strong features of our school ethos.

Danygraig runs a ‘School Council’ of pupil representatives. The opinions and reflections of our children play a major part in school development. We regard ‘the voice of the child’ as essential to effective teaching and learning. We are very much a traditional school; we have four ‘houses’, and we elect a Head Boy, a Head Girl and deputies.

Parents are essential partners in the education of their children. Many give valued assistance at school and encouragement in the various tasks that children take home. You will learn and understand what goes on in school by regular contact and discussion with members of staff. Please feel free to come and talk to us whenever you have information of value or a ‘problem’ to discuss. In addition, information is regularly available on our Internet Portal website,

Should you have any concerns over access to facilities – for example, wheelchair access or ‘Disabled’ toilets – please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can ensure that your needs are met. We aim to be a fully-inclusive school at all times. The school operates a Strategic Equality Plan and an Accessibility Plan in accordance with the Equality Act 2010. We will send out questionnaires with regard to equality and we are always striving to improve accessibility; your opinions of how we do things together with your suggestions will be most welcome

Welcome to DanygraigPrimary School.

N.P. Morgan

Headteacher

The Restorative Practice system will look into any matters of dispute or bullying. Pastoral Support will be offered to all children who might need help and support (including victims and offenders in cases of bullying)

The Aims of our School:

Our over-riding aim is to provide a caring and secure learning environment for our children to achieve their full potential.

We aim to have consistency in good standards in learning, assessment and teaching.

We aim to make our learning activities both stimulating and relevant to the children’s needs and experiences.

We aim to consistently promote and expect high standards in literacy, numeracy and skill development and e-learning.

Learning, where possible, will have its roots in the child’s own world and be experienced by the child at first hand. These experiences will enrich and further the understanding of his place, past, present and future.

Children will be introduced to and strive to master those skills which will enable them to take their place as competent, caring adults in an ever increasingly complex, technological society. This will start in the Early Years Department with the skill-based ‘Foundation’ philosophy.

The curriculum will have continuity and progression according to the requirements of the National Curriculum, and will place great emphasis on the development of literacy, numeracy and a wide range of skills – skills that can be transferred to the needs of life. The Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks (LNF) will drive the curriculum and schemes of learning. Skills of Literacy and Numeracy will be developed and practiced in all curriculum subjects. Clear pathways in LNF will enable more able children to forge ahead in their development and understanding of Literacy and Numeracy – children will not be held back by their registration year-groups. If they are capable of developing their skills further, the school will do everything to help, and will challenge them to do so.

E-learning will also underpin all learning activities.

We aim to provide a rich variety of extra curriculum experiences, and a curriculum of opportunity to cater for diverse interests and needs. Children with specific talents (especially non-academic talents) will encouraged to develop and practice those skills further and share their talents with others

We aim to help children become independent learners; to enable them to learn how to learn.

It is our aim for our children to develop a positive attitude towards learning and life, underpinned by good social values. This aim is included as our school logo ….
