Film and Independent Reading Permission Slips

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In an effort to supplement our novel readings we will be watching a some (not all) of the films listed below this semester. Not only will these films help to reinforce content comprehension and mastery, they will also expose our students to various methods and genres of learning. The content of each film is very closely adapted from the novels they portray, and none contain any material which is overtly inappropriate. The movies are as follows:

à  The Scarlet Letter / à  Ethan Frome / à  Macbeth
à  Shakespeare in Love / à  The Great Gatsby / à  Cast Away
à  The Last of the Mohicans / à  The Patriot / à  A Few Good Men
à  The Shawshank Redemption / à  The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Also, as a means to motivate students and keep them focused on class goals and assignment deadlines, I may also show a student-selected movie the day prior to winter and spring breaks. These movies will be rated G, PG, or PG-13 and will only be shown provided all students have completed the assigned work.

In addition to viewing supplemental films in class, students will also be responsible to choose two to three independent reading books (AP students will choose up to four) throughout the semester. Each of the books will be selected by students from an AR Literature list compiled by the Garnet Valley English Department, and none of the books contain any material which is overtly inappropriate. However, since some of the themes, situations, and language presented within the books may be of a ‘mature’ nature, I recommend you review the list with your son or daughter prior to their choosing a book. I will be distributing the list within the next week, after which time students will be required to choose a book. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Mr. Longo
