Course Description

The Peer Support Programme is a personal development programme for Year 9 secondary students. Senior students (usually Years 12 and/or 13) are trained to take a leadership role in helping younger students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to interact with their peers in positive ways.

A student manual and a teacher manual provide full information on the programme and the activities which make up the various modules. A copy of each manual will be provided to participants.

The programme provides schools with the opportunity to make links with curriculum learning areas and to reinforce key competencies such as thinking, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing.

The two-day course takes participants through each aspect of the peer support programme and provides a comprehensive introduction to the activities and strategies which underpin the programme. The course covers the following aspects:

* / Getting to Know You
* / Orientation to the School
* / Building the group
* / Communication
* / Co-operation
* / Self Awareness
* / Cultural Awareness
* / Values
* / Expressing Feelings
* / Friendship and Trust
* / Peer Pressure
* / Bullying
* / Family relationships

Outcomes from the workshop
