TITLE: DRAGONFLY POND
ROOM NO.: 8
DESCRIPTION: Students will work in small groups to lay out the components of a town that they will develop near or around a protected wetlands named “Dragonfly Pond.” The goal of this simulation is to prevent water pollution and reduce human impact on Dragonfly Pond.

DESCRIPTION: Students will learn about aquatic ecology, fish biology, fishing basics in the Barnegat Bay watershed, and connections between eating fish and human health.

TITLE: INVESTIGATING WATER AND HEALTH ISSUES

DESCRIPTION: Students will learn about how the Ocean County Department of Health investigates local water pollution issues, such as oil spills and hazardous materials releases, and how these incidents can impact local wildlife, the environment, and possibly human health. Photos and demonstrations will be utilized.

DESCRIPTION: Students will examine and learn about the creatures that live in healthy waterways – what they look like, what they need, and what they mean to people in terms of water quality. Students will also observe how human activities can impact the habitats of these creatures.

DESCRIPTION: Students will learn about (and examine) the various species of shellfish that reside in Barnegat Bay, along with their habitat needs, uses by humans, and how they are being affected by people.

TITLE: STORM FLOODPLAIN MODEL

DESCRIPTION: Students will explore the value of wetlands and retention ponds in areas that require flood management. A model will be used that demonstrates how stream flow is affected by high volume of runoff and how increased runoff can impact communities downstream.

DESCRIPTION: Students will enjoy a lively presentation that includes sights and sounds while focusing on the importance of water resources and how the Pinelands protects the water quality of Barnegat Bay. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with a groundwater demonstration model.
