TRYOUT CRITERIA

The coaching staff will be looking for coachable athletes whom have a great work ethic, love to compete, and want to learn to become better players and teammates.

Prior volleyball experience or skill helps, but is not required. Players will be tested and evaluated for athletic ability and level of volleyball skill. Coaches will look for the following:

  1. ATTITUDE: Coaches are looking for players whom are positive, competitive and eager to learn; those whom demonstrate strong leadership skills, ability to work/communicate as a team and those whom are willing to take risk and are unafraid to learn from mistakes.
  1. ATHLETIC ABILITY: Coaches are looking for players with the ability to learn and perform complex skills. Volleyball puts a premium on explosiveness and rewards those who are unafraid to attack the ball on offense as well as defense.
  1. POSITION: Coaches are looking for players whose skills fit a specific need for the team’s overall balance.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TRYOUTS:

Expect to work hard!

Players will be asked to perform all physical testing and drills at full speed. Players should run when shagging balls, moving from drill to drill and going to and from water breaks. You will not sit down during tryouts, except during lunch or break.

Expect to show your skills!

At tryouts players will be given every opportunity to show their skills. The coaching staff is looking for position players, but we love to see players who are not afraid to play different positions.

Expect to enjoy yourself!

Tryouts are a great way to be in a competitive environment whether playing volleyball and/or conditioning. We suggest you stay loose, make new friends, and decide you will have a good time.

ATTITUDE EVALUATION:

Players should be willing to work hard, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes and keep giving good effort. Coaches will take note of players whom listen, follow directions, and ask questions when necessary. Athletes who are coachable competitors stand the best chance of making the team. We will be looking for individuals whom are always at game speed. Players must be able to lead, follow, or get out of the way!

SKILL/COMPETITION EVALUATION:

Players will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of basic volleyball skills (passing, serving, hitting, setting, blocking and defense) in competitive situations. As with most team sports, coaches will evaluate players for their ability and potential to fill specific positional needs (setter, outside hitter, middle blocker, opposite hitter, defensive specialist and/or libero).

HOW TO IMPRESS COACHES:

  1. Be among the first to arrive prepared and ready in the gym and set up nets and equipment.
  2. Be among the first to line up for drills.
  3. Look the coach in the eye when she speaks to you or your team.
  4. BE LOUD!
  5. Be a Good Teammate!
  6. Be a Champion Ball Shagger.
  7. Be among the first to help take down the nets and put away equipment.

Physical Testing Drills:

Mile Run: The mile run test measures aerobic endurance. Varsity players should run a ten minute mileor less.

Height/Reach: Height and reach do play an important part in the evaluation process at tryouts, although relative by position. Reach is not only measured for blocking potential, but also for defensive potential.

Approach/Block Jump:Players will do a three step approach, with the height of their jump being measured. Players will stand and block-jump,with the height of their block-jump being measured. This is only one component to show how athletic a player is in exploding off the ground. The net is 7’ (feet) 4 1/8” (inches).

Broad Jump: The broad jump is done from a standing position and measures how far a player can jump, directionally. This is another component in showing an athlete’s explosiveness.

Push-ups and Sit-ups: Players will have 30 seconds to perform proper push-ups and sit-ups. This will test the strength of the player.

8-6-4-2 Drill: Player will begin on the side of the volleyball court. When given the signal, the player will run across the court and back. This will equal 1. The player must finish the following times in a row.

8 times in 1 min, 6 times in 45 sec, 4 times in 30 sec, and 2 times in 15 sec.

Skill Drills:

Players will be put through various drills throughout tryouts. These drills will include: warm-up ball control drills, forearm/overhead passing drills, serving, serve receive, hitting, defense, blocking, and 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 6v6 team play.

Coaches are looking for well-rounded volleyball players whom can fill various team roles. We, as coaches, like to see hustle, communication and team work.

A Note from the coaching staff:

One of the toughest jobs for any coaching staff is the final decision about which players make the team and which do not. The Patriot coaching staff strives to make all decisions fairly, without bias, with extended deliberation and evaluation of each prospective player. We as a coaching staff appreciate everyone who comes to tryout and gives their best effort.

Thank You and Good Luck,

Patriot Volleyball Coaching Staff
