Mary Sherwood – 4 Dementia Carers / Mary is the founder of 4 Dementia Carers.org. Mary explained how she started, the concept behind it when she was working at the Met Office in Exeter. The concept and the model with three objectives:
Increased awareness and understanding of dementia amongst all staff
A Dementia Carer Network group – meeting monthly for support and information
Carer Buddies who can meet up for a coffee to talk to someone who understands
The idea was assessed and enthusiastically accepted by ‘Idea Street’, the Met Office’s platform for innovative ideas. From then on, the Met Office encouraged and supported the vision.
Training
The Dementia Friends Champion role seemed a perfect place to start. Training took place in Bristol in April 2014 and the Dementia Friends presentation has benefitted many.
Creating Dementia Friends helpedto achieve the objective of increasing awareness and understanding of dementia. The Dementia Friends presentation could be delivered in the community as well as at the Met Office. This is entirely in keeping with the Met Office ethos of helping our community.
In June the Union, Prospect, was sponsoring a UnionLearn (Tribal) distance learning course in Principles of Dementia Care level 2. Mary felt this would provide her with invaluable knowledge for the Dementia Carer Network Group she planned to create at the Met Office in July. This course is very interesting and full of useful knowledge. It taught Mary so much that she wished she had known when caring for her mother. Knowing that her mother would have appreciated her being able to help others, Mary dedicates her efforts to her mother’s memory.
The Met Office was extremely supportive and Prospect sponsored Mary’s study. A successful Dementia Carer Friendly Workplace depends on buy-in from leadership as well as permission and encouragement for colleagues to engage. To read more about Mary’s work see

  1. Managed Repeats - Explained managed repeats, started 1st September
  2. Medication by telephone - governance, access on telephone lines, safety, ordering only what is required. Emailed & text, will be writing to the remainder next week. Councillor Dewhisrt has been in discussion with Rosie about how to help the vulnerable patients that would have difficulty ordering their medication. David Miller asked if spouse’s can still order for each other, Rosie explained that if signed up to SystmOnline then proxy access can be given as long as the patient consents.
  3. SystmOnline - All online suppliers have enabled Detailed Coded Record access (DCR) etc. The practice has been granting all new requests and is working through those that have not already got it enabled. There are many benefits for using the online system, appointments can be made from your home over the weekend and evenings, and appointments can be cancelled in the same way. If DCR has been enabled you will be able to see your test results, you can send messages to the practice and also order your medication. It is expected that next year there will be more services on offer via the online system.
  4. Health Navigation - All staff have been given basic training, there is more comprehensive training to be delivered in February and March across the locality. The term “Health Navigation” is about signposting a patient to the most suitable person to meet their needs. We are building templates on our clinical system which will be signed off and deemed safe by a GP. The Locality will be launching Health Navigation to the patients in April and will seek engagement from the PPG groups before.
  5. Future meetings – see below
  6. Health & care videos – theses have now been added to the Kingskerswell & Ipplepen website
GP’s have cards in their rooms which they are using to promote this whilst in surgery.
  1. Kerswella – Last year Kingscare, Share & Care IPP & KK and the practice met to see how the voluntary sector could potentially be expanded across the practice area. It was decided that a separate group to S&C would be set up and it would explore the potential gaps in the voluntary groups and support them. After application we were successfully awarded a lottery grant, this has allowed us to appoint a Co-Ordinator for a new organisation called “Kerswella.” Gill Gould has been appointed this role and is already working hard to identify areas that need additional support with volunteers. We will be asking Gill Gould to come along to a PPG meeting and give us an update of what she will be doing.

6.NHS Health Checks /
  1. Uptake has been as always brilliant, vaccinating well over 2,000 to date. Sally explained how the Quadrivalent vaccine was made up. This year is 4 strains, normally had only 3. Trivalent is still around, but Quadrivalent is thought to be better. The practice has just ordered another 300 vaccines. For patients that have been unable to get to the flu clinics the practice will be holding further clinics, but they are not drop in clinics. Jane was told last year not eligible but she is a multiple carer.
  2. At Kingskerswell HC the practice sold tea, coffee and cakes again. This year the money raised was split between equipment fund and Rowcroft.
  3. Good uptake for kiddie flu, vaccinated about 80 to date.
  4. Pneumococcal has a good uptake, although there is currently a national shortage, this year we did not get our full quota. Eligibility for the pneumococcal vaccine is the same criteria as the flu vaccine.
  5. A big thank you to Julia and Ian for their help on the Saturday morning doing the teas & coffee.
  6. Health checks – this is a vascular check for patients between 40 & 74 excluding those with a previous diagnosis such as Coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation, Transient Ischaemic Attack , Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Heart failure, and Peripheral Arterial Disease. Newton Abbot Patient Forum
  • Report
  • Proposed PIL review
/ David Miller – explained that he felt the Newton Abbot group was just going through the doldrums, hopefully this will improve.
There was a discussion around patient information leaflets that are given with medication. David suggested that patients could be advised to speak to a GP if they had any issues with their medication.
David said someone at the Newton Abbot group received his in Spanish.
As far as the practice is concerned the PIL is a legal document that has to be issued when dispensing medication. Dr Sally Roberts supported this.
David went to TBH recently was really impressed, reception was good, the staff seemed happy, directions good, a very pleasant experience. Brian Mackness said in large we are very lucky with the local hospitals.

  • The minutes are published on the website, as a group it was decided to use initials rather than patient names, should this continue or revert to including names?
/ PPG Names - It was agreed that names of the PPG would be added again rather than use initials.
Future meetings – If anyone needs transport to either practice for the PPG meetings this can be arranged.
Hand gel on show – Can we advertise and promote it the use of hand gel more, and at flu clinics.Sarah Gerry took a relative to Ipplepen flu clinic but the traffic was awful. Can the practice advise the police in future the dates of the Flu clinics?
Sally said Day Lewis have stopped delivering so patients that previously had meds in a dossette never had their medication , this was relayed to the patients. This was not one of our patients.
