Learning Outcomes by Core Focus Areas

Personal Development

Participants will be able to articulate their personal strengths and challenges when it comes to their leadership style. They will have a plan for how to maximize and address these areas respectively.

Group Development

Participants will be able to articulate an understanding of the stages of group development, effective management of conflict, and ways to best utilize individual strengths in effective teams.

Getting Things Done

Participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to complete tasks, follow up with others, and effectively create, delegate, and prioritize work.

Making Connections

Participants will be able to identify resources at USM. They will be able to articulate the impact of cultural competency in developing collaborations with other groups and organizations, and demonstrate the ability to understand cultural differences.

Communication

Participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of language on a target audience, articulate basic tools for marketing, and utilize effective, clear, and timely communication in person and in writing.

Prior Leadership Experience

Prior leadership experiences such as Resident Assistants, team captains, student group members, on campus employment, etc., may earn credit towards completing the certificate program. It is the intention of this program to further develop our involved students. Students should meet with a Leadership Coach to review their previous experiences and receive credit towards one of the core focus area sessions, not to exceed 1 session per core focus area.

Involvement/Leadership Coaches

Students will have access to Involvement/Leadership Coaches throughout the year. Coaches are Campus Life staff members who can help students identify ways they can get involved on campus. The coaches can also help students reflect on their current leadership experiences, explore their personal strengths, and identify areas for improvement.
