GLOSSARY OF TERMS FOR COURSE CATALOG AND SCHEDULE OF CLASSES

TERM / DEFINITION
Associated Classes (Lecture/Laboratory Combination Courses) / Lecture/lab combination courses that are not separate Course IDs established as co-requisites, but are instead the same Course ID with multiple components. Lecture and lab combinations appear under one Course ID and one Offering, but as separate Components that are scheduled at different times, most likely with different instructors. These are known as Associated Classes in PeopleSoft terminology and can reflect one to one, many to one, or many to many relationships between the lecture and the laboratory components.
BPG / A Business Process Guide documents PeopleSoft processes and transactions for end users. It may also be used as a training guide.
Catalog / An inventory of courses offered by the university, both historically and currently, which includes information on each course such as course title, units, workload hours, components, description, and topics.
Catalog Number / The 3 digit number associated with a course offering. Catalog numbers identify the career level of a course at CSUSM: Courses numbered 001 to 099 are nonbaccalaureate developmental courses, 100 to 299 are lowerdivision, 300 to 499 are upper-division, 500 to 599 are graduate level, and may be taken by advanced upper-division, postbaccalaureate, or graduate students for undergraduate or graduate credit. Courses numbered 600 to 699 are graduate level, and 700 to 799 are doctoral level.
For example, in the course offering identified as HIST 318, the catalog number is 318. See page 244 in 06-08 Catalog.
CIP Codes / Classification of Instructional Programs codes are a standard set of numbers recognized at a national level and used for consistent reporting of subject areas across post-secondary institutions.
Class / A section of a course that is identified by its specific term, day, time, location, and instructor.
Combined Sections/Classes / A feature of the PeopleSoft Schedule of Classes that allows different classes or different sections of the same class to be scheduled in the same room at the same time with total seat availability managed by section.
Co-requisite / In PeopleSoft, co-requisites are different courses (different Course IDs)with the requirement that they must be taken during the same term.
Course Attributes / Class Attributes / Course attributes are attached to courses on the Catalog Data page and to classes on the Basic Data page. They may be used for institutional research purposes and to print repetitive text in the schedule of classes or course catalog, such as "Offered in Fall Only."While course attributes will roll to all offerings of a course, class attributes can be specified for a specific offering of the course. Unlike requirement designations, course attributes do not transfer to PeopleSoft Academic Advisement. Values for course attributes are provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office.
Course Component / Indicates the parts of the course offering (lecture, laboratory, seminar, etc.). A single course offering may have multiple components. For example, an offering for BIOL, General Biology, may have two components – lecture and laboratory.
Course ID / A 6 digit number that uniquely identifies a course in PeopleSoft. Typically, a Course ID encompasses all offerings that meet the same degree requirements or contain essentially the same content. For example,ECON 445, PSCI 445 and WMST 445 have the same Course ID, but are different offerings by Cal Poly for degree seeking students and Continuing Education students. In addition, the Course ID allows the definitions of a course to change over time without changing the key identifier.
Course Offering / A unique subset of detailed information associated with a course, including Subject Area, Catalog Number, Academic Group, and Academic Organization. A course may have a single offering or multiple offerings. For example, the same course may be offered to degree seeking students in different academic organizations such as Econ, Political Science, and WMST. An offering for each of these academic organizations would be created under the same course ID and identified with different subject areas, i.e. ECON 445, PSCI 445, and WMST 445. In this example, the Media Criticism course has three offerings.
Cross-listed Courses / Defined in the Offerings page of Course Catalog. Cross-listed courses have the same course ID number, so they share the same values found in the Catalog Data page, but have different Subject Areas and Catalog Numbers as viewed in the Offerings page. When classes are scheduled, each class is associated with a single offering.
CS Number / A coding scheme used by the CSU Chancellor’s Office for faculty workload reporting. CS Number is specified on the Components page of Course Catalog.
CSU HEGIS Codes / The CSU’s modified version of the Higher Education General Information Survey codes, which are a common set of numbers that categorize academic subject areas across state universities to provide comprehensive and consistent reporting at CSU and national levels.
CSU Baseline / Customizations made in PeopleSoft that are based upon requirements from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and delivered to each respective campus for implementation.
Effective Date / The effective date is the date the information first became (or will become) applicable.
The Current Effective Dated Row is the information that is true today. There is only one Current Effective Dated Row. Rows with effective dates prior to the Current Effective Dated Row are Historical Rows. There can be multiple Historical Rows. Rows with effective dates greater than the Current Effective Dated Row are Future Rows. There can be multiple Future Rows.
Enrollment Requirement Group / Comprised of requisites that are requirements for specific courses. In the Offering page of the Course Catalog, you attach an Enrollment Requirement Group to a course to identify co-requisite or prerequisite requirements for the course. For example, CHEM 351 and CHEM 352 are prerequisites for CHEM 491. CHEM 351 and CHEM 352 would be set up as an Enrollment Requirement Group and then attached to CHEM 352 in PeopleSoft. At this time, Enrollment Requirement Groups are not being used at CSUSM.
Equivalent Courses / Unlike cross-listed courses, equivalent courses can have different requisites, requirements, etc. Each equivalent course has a unique course ID number. Use Course Equivalency in PeopleSoft to create Equivalent Course Groups. At this time, Equivalent Courses are not being used at CSUSM.
HEGIS Codes / Higher Education General Information Survey codes are a common set of numbers that categorize academic subject areas across postsecondary institutions to provide comprehensive and consistent reporting at a national level.
Include History Mode / Allows a user to view all data rows for a page, regardless of the effective date, but does not allow any changes or updates to be made to those pages.
Instructor/ Advisor Table / A set of data associated with faculty and advisors, such as faculty rank, advisor status, instructor availability, and the courses that an instructor is qualified to teach.
Lecture/Laboratory Co-requisite Courses / These courses appear with two different Course IDs as opposed to Associated Lecture/Laboratory courses that share the same Course ID. Lecture/laboratory co-requisite courses must be taken during the same term.
Prerequisite / Prerequisites are requirements associated with a course, which must be met prior to enrollment in that course. A prerequisite may be successful completion of another course or a test requirement. For example, a student may not enroll in MATH 521 until they have successfully completed the prerequisite course of MATH 470.
Requisite / In PeopleSoft, the term requisite refers to both prerequisites and co-requisites. Co-requisites are associated with courses that have two different Course IDs that must be taken during the same term. Prerequisites are requirements associated with a course, which must be met prior to enrollment in that course.
Requirement Designation / Defines a requirement such as GE,that can be met through a course. Requirement designations are assigned to courses in the Catalog Data page of the Course Catalog in PeopleSoft. For example,GEO 102 meets the General Education (GE) requirement in Area A1, so it has a Requirement Designation of A1.
* GE = General Education
Schedule of Classes / Course offerings that have been scheduled for a specified term.
Subject Area / Course prefixes as determined by academic disciplines or departments with the approval of the academic governing bodies of California State University San Marcosand the CSU Chancellor’s Office. For example, courses for the LTWR department have a subject area prefix of LTWR while courses for the Math department have a subject area prefix of MATH.
