Periodic Table

Element Report

Objectives: to understand the significance of the periodic table through the 'eyes' of a selected element.

The periodic table is the chemist's most valued tool. It is important for students to understand the development and workings of this table. By preparing an indepth report on your selected element, you will examine the properties illustrated by the periodic table. In addition, you will know the history of the development of the chart and why it is considered to be such a remarkable piece of scientific equipment.

Activity:

  1. Each class member will be assigned an element number. You may have "control" of that element or that element plus 25, 50 or 75. Report your choice to the teacher.
  2. You will have 2 weeks to complete your report. One lab period will be devoted to researching your element. The remainder of the work will be completed outside of class.
  3. The primary source of your information will come from internet sites. You must use at least 10 websites and include them in your bibliography.
  4. Your report must include information on the following topics:
  1. Atomic number
  2. Atomic mass
  3. Periodic properties including graphs
  4. Electron arrangement
  5. History of its discovery
  6. Examples of its reactivity
  7. Uses and abundance in nature
  8. Purification process
  9. Isotopes
  10. Its monetary value and importance to mankind
  11. A unique piece of information
  1. Illustrate your report with diagrams, photo images or movie clips.
  2. Part of this project is to have you increase your computer and technology skills. Visit at least one website that is interactive. Explore the entire periodic table to get a feel for the position of your element.
