JOB DESCRIPTION
Position:Principal
Reports to:Superintendent
Employment Status:Regular/Full-time
FLSA Status:Exempt
Description:Provides visionary educational leadership to all staff members and facilitates an educational setting that promotes a positive learning experience for all students in an environment that develops independence and self-worth.

Essential Functions:
●Ensure safety of students
●Serve as instructional leader of building
●Direct the activities of the school staff members
●Implement and monitor all Board policies and regulations
●Oversee the operations of the building, grounds and other school property
●Direct, oversee, supervise and evaluate the instructional and guidance programs and the work schedules for all assigned personnel
●Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
●Establish guidelines for proper student conduct, attire and discipline
●Monitor and resolve problems with student attendance
●Plan and supervise fire drills and other emergency preparedness programs
●Recommend to the Superintendent continuation or non-continuation of employment of teaching and classified staff
●Conduct regular staff meetings
●Attend special events, functions, and athletic events
●Oversee the maintenance of records and controls in the funds of the school activity account
●Supervise the maintenance of student records
●Supervise and annually evaluate classroom teachers, classified staff, Guidance Counselors, and Assistant Principal where applicable
●Organize, administer, and direct all student activities and school events
●Requisition supplies, textbooks, equipment and other necessary materials
●Prepare and submit the building budgetary request
●Monitor expenditure of funds
●Monitor the registration, assignment, promotion and/or retention of all students
●Review, approve, and/or make recommendations to teacher lesson plans
●Schedule educational assemblies for the student population
●Supervise development of curriculum, cooperatively with staff and Superintendent
●Counsel students regarding their academic, social and personal concerns in cooperation with Guidance Counselors where applicable
●Respond to, and appropriately handle, complaints of parents in a timely manner
●Coordinate custodial service with the maintenance supervisor
●Appraise the performance of teachers through class visits and conferences for the purpose of improving instruction, and assisting teachers with any problems
●Inform teachers and other employees regarding the purposes and policies of the school
●Arrange meetings/conferences between parents and teachers when appropriate
●Prepare all reports and maintain such records as required by school law, regulation, or request of the superintendent
●Assist in the selection, retention and promotion of certified and noncertified personnel
●Enforce policies regarding school equipment and property, observance of school laws, and safety procedures
●Ensure that after-school activities are chaperoned and that the building is closed after such activities have concluded
●Coordinate in-service education programs to promote positive professional learning educators and non-certified staff
●Maintain the strictest confidence concerning personnel, students and operational concerns of the district
●Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
●Report all cases of suspected child abuse to appropriate school personnel and proper government authority
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
●Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
●Act as the public relations agent for building
●Serve as role model for students and staff
●Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent
●Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials
●Establish and maintain professional relationships
●Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops
Qualifications/Certificates:
●Active Connecticut Department of Education Principal Certification
●Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Vernon Board of Education may find appropriate
