Dissertation Research
From August 15, 2003 to August 8, 2004
I spent one year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, my native city, conducting field research. There, I traveled to Brasília and São Paulo, to conduct video and audio interviews with artists, scholars, and politicians. My project was sponsored by the Universidade Estácio de Sá, in response to my initiative and coordination of a partnership program between the Brazilian university and the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, at the University of California, Davis. As a result of my research, I directed and produced a documentary, Art and the Margins, with the support of the Program of Communications, at Universidade Estácio de Sá.
Liaison and Coordinator
In 2003, I organized and coordinated two partnerships between the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, at the University of California, Davis, and the Universities Estácio de Sá and UniRio - Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. As a first step of legitimating the partnership with Universidade Estácio de Sá, I organized the international part of a symposium on fashion to be held in Brazil September 23rd and 24th, 2004. Techmoda was sponsored by the Brazilian university Estácio de Sá at the Marina da Glória, in Rio de Janeiro. My guests at the seminar were professor Susan Kaiser, Ph.D., University of California, Davis; professor Janet Hethorn, Ph.D., University of Delaware; Christopher Breward, Ph.D., Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and fashion designer Gaspar Saldanha, Claiborne Men, New York City.

During July 2000, I was the critic in residency of Art/OMI, a three-week international residency program near Ghent, New York. Art/OMI invites approximately 28 painters, sculptors, and installation artists from around the world. Participants benefit from the advice and criticism of noted art critics, gallery owners and prominent artists who are invited to visit. The program also includes a Critic-in-Residence whose work entails an on-going interaction with artists through studio visits and critiquing work in progress, as well as curating their works in an open studio exhibition at the end of the residency. I am also a member of their board of directors.
