Total Credits / Completion of a minimum of at least 48 semester credit hours (a maximum of nine combined credit hours of practicum (if taken, 3 credits), thesis or dissertation (6 credits) count toward the minimum of 48 credit hours, therefore at least 39 credit hours of courses must be taken in courses other than practicum, thesis or dissertation); for the student with a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of at least 72 semester credit hours. Two minors or a minor and a breadth area are required.

*Breadth: a “focus” area that includes at least 3 interdisciplinary courses/9 credit hrs (from across departments) that represent a specific topical or methods-related area. At least 1 course/3 credits must be outside the major and minor discipline. Examples of potential “breadth” areas include (but are not limited to) research methods, biological sciences, cancer, genetics, global health, health disparities, health economics, health law, health policy, innovation, infectious disease, injury and violence, leadership, maternal and child health, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, toxicology.

Concentration: a problem-based area that spans disciplinary fields and therefore draws upon faculty expertise from two or more departments. Concentrations are supported by a specific curriculum and consist of 9-14 credit hours of coursework. For a list of approved concentrations, please see the UTSPH website (https://sph.uth.tmc.edu/academics/concentrations/). A concentration can count as a breadth.

Other notes:

·  The intermediate statistics course (PH 1700) does not count toward the doctoral credit hours.

·  After the preliminary exam, students should select a faculty member from both their minor and breadth areas who can advise students on appropriate courses to fulfill the requirements of the minor or breadth.

**CHECK COURSE SCHEDULE EACH TERM - Terms may change from those listed above
