Aims:To benefit young people under 25 who are resident in the City of York who, in the opinion of the Trustees, are in need of financial assistance. This can be for books, musical instruments, sports equipment or any other educational equipment not provided by the Local Authority or for other educational purposes as the Trustees feel appropriate. Grants may also be made to Educational Establishments within the City of York boundary.

Area of benefit:The Diocese of York (see website for map)

Aims:The Heworth Moor House Trust aims to help persons who live within the Diocese of York, who are in need, hardship and distress as a result of pregnancy and their children. This means that the Trust offers grants up to £250 to help eligible individuals to buy clothing, bedding, buggies, washing machines, tumble dryers, essentials for a baby or household items. Grants may be considered to assist other organisations with similar aims.

Exclusions:The Trust cannot help with debts or give loans.

Typical grant:Small grants from £25 to £250. Larger grants may be available in exceptional cases.

How to apply:To qualify you must live within the Diocese of York and be the carer of a baby or young child. Download an application form or write to the secretary at the address above for a form. The application should be completed and submitted by a professional worker such as a Social Worker, Health Visitor, GP, Community Nurse or Priest. In addition a supporting letter should be provided by the sponsor giving any relevant background information that would be helpful to the trustees in reaching a decision. Quotes and/or estimates are required for all applications.

Aims:Grants are awarded to benefit children and young people up to and including the age of 24 who reside within a twenty-mile radius of the City of York. A primary aim is to support children and young people who are in financial need. Applications are considered for:

  • social and medical reasons including overseas trips with a charitable purpose.
  • young people who have a special talent, e.g. in the sports or musical field, to enable them to train or purchase equipment. A letter from a professional who has knowledge of, and can vouch for, the young person’s talent must support these applications.
  • young people’s projects and groups, for example scouts, guides and youth groups.

Exclusions: There should be no public or statutory funds available to meet the proposed use of funds.

Deadlines: Trustees consider applications in January, April, July and October. The Administrator must receive applications at least 3 weeks before the meeting i.e. in December, March, June and September. There is approximately £18,000 grant funding available to award each quarter.

Aims:The Poors Branch

Gives small grants to people in York who are in need, due to hardship or distress.

Lady Hewleys Fund

Makes small grants to mature citizens (age 21 or over) living in York who need financial support for educational purposes.

The Advancement Branch

Makes small grants to young people (under the age of 21) living in York who need help with their educational needs.

How to apply:Applicants must reside within the City of York boundary. Grants are only given to individuals, however an organisation may apply on behalf of an individual. Applications from individuals must be backed up by an authoritative person with a professional background eg Doctor, Nurse, Teacher, Social Worker, Citizens Advice Bureau, etc. Please state where to send the chequeand to whom it should be made payable. Please give as much information as possible, especially where finances are concerned. All requests are considered on their own merit.
