Beneficiaries

Founded in 1983, Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) is the oldest and largest AIDS Service Organization in Oregon and Southwest Washington. In 2009, CAP was selected as one of the Portland Business Journal’s Top 10 Most Admired Nonprofits in Oregon by 2,000 area CEOs. 2009 and each year thereafter, CAP was rated by the same as one of the 20 best mid-size nonprofits to work. CAP’s mission is to prevent HIV infections, support and empower people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, and eliminated HIV/AIDS-related stigma. A few of the core programs offered by CAP include:

  • CAP’s Kids’ Connection programs served 85 families living with HIV/AIDS, including 99 children, by offering programs as varied as help disclosing HIV status to schools, guardianship planning, teaching kids about HIV, recreational opportunities with other HIV-affected families, and a week-long residential camp for children.
  • Last year, the Supportive Housing department provided housing services, including rental assistance, emergency assistance, and life skills training to nearly 628 people. Support included everything from allocating over $890,000 directly to meeting client needs for stable housing to Rent Well and budgeting courses to ensure long-term stability for individuals and families.
  • CareLink is a short-term bridge to permanent care for HIV-positive people who need special attention. These people may be newly diagnosed and unsure of where to turn, diagnosed but not in regular medical care, have complications such as mental illness or addiction, or be leaving prison. CareLink works up to three months with each client to find housing, food, medical treatment, counseling, and more, all the while helping them plan permanent care.
  • Latino Medical Case Management provides culturally competent, Spanish language case management for CAP’s Latino clients.
  • Working Choices launched January 2011. Last year, the program helped 87 clients in their quest for employment through resume and interviewing workshops; networking events; a weekly Job Club; and Job Lounge, weekly “open houses” where clients can print resumes, use a computer or fax machine, and get advice on job applications.
  • Testing for All provides rapid HIV testing and risk reduction counseling in CAP’s comfortable offices to anyone who wants it. We request a donation, but will turn away no one for lack of funds. Last year, we tested 548 people.
  • CAP’s Youth HIV Education program including Teen2Teen and ChatPDX reached out to 3,385 youth through youth-facilitated workshops and peer education, and served an additional 4,990 youth through outreach, including social media.

Other beneficiaries of AIDS Walk Portland 2014 include Martha’s Pantry in Vancouver, WA and the following Portland-based organizations:

AIDS Walk Portland allows partnering Organizations (HIV Day Center, Martha’s Pantry, Our House, Partnership Project and Quest) to retain 75% of all funds raised by their teams.

A: The Walk is 2.4 miles. Our route is flat and accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

Q: What does it mean to be a team captain?

A: First, rest assured that it does not take a lot of time. A team captain is the main point of contact for a team. You may want to share updates with your team, offer prizes to encourage them or check in with them to lend support. Make the Walk an opportunity to catch up with co-workers, friends, and loved ones. CAP staff is always available to support you any way we can.

Q: Who comes to AIDS Walk Portland?

A: This is a welcoming, inclusive event. We encourage everyone to attend, especially those representing diverse communities of race, color, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, faith, age, national origin, citizenship status and physical or mental disability.

Q: What if I don’t make my fundraising goal?

A: No sweat! Set an ambitious goal so your friends and family will be encouraged to support you. We can work with you to reach it, but there are no penalties if you do not.

Q: Can I bring my dog?

A: This is a dog-friendly event with a dog park. All well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Water is available along the route. Dogs must have all necessary shots.

Q: I’ll be out of town on September 22. Can I still help?

A: If you cannot make the Walk, register online as a Sleep Walker and help us reach our goal of fundraising $500,000. If you raise over $100, we will mail you the AIDS Walk Portland t-shirt we hand out during at the event, or you can purchase it for $25 when you register online.

Q: Is there a fee to register?

Only $10. But we have a promotion code for anyone who is unable to pay. No one is ever turned away.

Use Social Media

On Facebook, use the Attach A Link feature of the status bar to send out a link to your personal donation page. On Twitter, tweet your AIDS Walk homepage URL. Ask friends to donate- or to join your team and fundraise themselves!

Matching Gift Companies

Many companies will match donations or pay for volunteer hours that their employees donate to qualifying non-profit organizations. Be sure to check if your company will match your donation. A matching gift company will have its own form to hand to your team captain or AIDS Walk Portland. Don’t forget to ask donors to see if their companies will match their donations too!
