INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

Big Ideas Math, Green Edition – Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell

MAJOR TOPICS:

Mathematics is a lifelong process in which students achieve mathematical competence through problem solving, communication, reasoning, and making connections.

Math includes the studies of:

- Numerical Expressions and Factors

- Fractions and Decimals

- Algebraic Expressions and Properties

- Areas of Polygons

- Ratios and Rates

- Integers and Coordinate Plane

- Equations and Inequalities

- Surface Ares and Volumes

- Statistical Measures

- Data Displays

Throughout the year, students explain their understanding and analysis of mathematical ideas, concepts, and data through both oral and written communication. The following learning materials are used in the classroom to promote the application of mathematical concepts:

·  Hands-On-Equations, Connected Mathematics, On Core Mathematics, Exemplars, and other manipulative.

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS:

Math homework is generally assigned every evening. Assignments are expected to be passed in on time and finished completely. Homework is evaluated based on completion and effort, not on accuracy. Incomplete or missing homework assignments must be made up and passed in on the next day in order to receive partial-credit.

2 points – ½ complete

1 point – ¼ complete

0 point – incomplete

GRADING POLICY:

5% Attendance/Participation/Organizing Notebook

10% Preparation (homework and bringing materials needed for class)

15% Quizzes

25% Projects

20% Exemplars/Open Response Questions

MAKE-UP PROCEDURE:

If a student is absent from school, it is his/her responsibility to see Ms. Nguyen upon return to school to find out about any missed class notes and/or homework assignments. Arrangements will be made on an individual basis to take any missed tests. Make-up work is to be done in a reasonable amount of time based on length of absences.

A tool bag that contains the following items: pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, pencil sharpener, dry-erase marker, glue stick, scissors, and ruler.

Adjustments may be made to this syllabus to meet students’ needs. If adjustments are made to this syllabus during the school year, parents/guardians will be notified and a revised syllabus will be issued.
